How many delivered mail per hour
There’s a walk in my DO spread across 3.5 frames. Double slots for most of it. All new build. One duty is part time too and they don’t come in until 9.30, so some poor sod is left to prep well over 1000 points. Any flats are a nightmare as they’re all just shoved into any slot as people can’t be arsed to match the street with the duty and just do it by the name of the estate.
Yet the duty holder will literally run around and get it all done and lapsing and still be done an hour early. Anyone else is back an hour or two late if they stay out

This is an Old Chestnut that we always hear from DOMs SP. While I'm sure we all appreciate your input from the Mail Processing side it often has little impact on the daily lives of us Posties. If you have to walk up a driveway to a house with 1 letter/flat, or 5 letters/flats, it still takes the same amount of time.
From a personal point of view I find signed for packets take up the most time. Anything that you can scan, and leave in a Safe Place, isn't too much of a problem. IF you're the Regular Duty Holder and know all those Safe Places.

Is that why we now have an extra 15 mins on delivery?lightningpostman wrote: parcel revenue has grown year on year

1 vs 5 letters for an address, doing things properly, saves the following approximate amount of time...Dorset Plodder wrote:SpacePhoenix wrote:Addressed letter mail has definitely dropped a lot, when you look at the sizes of the sequencing batches compared with a few years ago and flats have dropped a lot judging by the number of boxes of flats from other MCs where they've run packets, manual letters and mech mail (that should have gone through an IMP or iLSM) through their T2K machines to justify the use of them (wouldn't surprise me to see RM start decommissioning T2K machines at some point)Ozzvaldo wrote:All that the duty holder hears from the DOM is the usual, "Mail's dropping, therefore it should be manageable"

~8 seconds of IPS manual sorting (if it wasn't in sequenced tray)
~10 seconds putting in duty frame
~4 seconds of outdoor time, while you stand still while retrieving mail for that address at the previous delivery point from your working bundle
The outdoor bit is often overlooked, because most OPGs retreive mail from their working bundle while walking, risking a trip because they aren't looking where they are going. If you save an average of 3 seconds per house over a duty with 600 houses by doing this, you've just made the outdoor part of a duty look 1800 seconds (half an hour) easier.

Surely new estates mean new duties and more jobs?
I think what happened initially is that the postie started claiming overtime for it everyday and the managers just let him do it. He then got fed up of the late finishes but instead of cutting off and getting ear-ache of his manager, he just decided to come in over an hour early, skip his break and rush round to try and finish on time. The fact that this new housing estate has sprung up with potentially another 100 or so calls, the manager as usual does nothing and just left him too it. What makes doing his duty harder is that these new calls are not even on his frame so its harder for him sort through the letters.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

And I also believe that a Rural duty with under 300 calls and fewer mail/packets and more adept to this one wave of mech strategy that the company are planning. I saw one guy on a rural duty today and he had like 15 letters in his 2nd wave!!!

Solysitic do have a system that can sort small parcels into sacks, each per walk
https://www.solystic.com/mobile-robotic ... processing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
though i don't think it would be viable as it would probably take up too much space and possibly be too slow.
Since the start of Network 18, the mail arrives in MCs noticably later and failures by night shifts of packets are becoming quite common (possibly will be daily once autumn pressure starts). We even sometimes get our last lorry come in too late to be processed, before Network 18 that would have been once in a blue moon but now seems like it happens at least 1 day a week.
There's no slack in the system now to allow for late lorries or workloads being above forecast (traffic forecasts are a load of crap, a random number generator would be more accurate)

You really can get some interesting statistics when you start looking at time spent on delivery can't you?

What size are your frames? 3 and a half frames with double slots would be many thousands of drops unless you have very old, smaller sized frames? We can have approx 1100-1200 drops on a 9 section frame with approx 50% double slots.MinTee wrote:There’s a walk in my DO spread across 3.5 frames. Double slots for most of it. All new build. single slots 20 per section and 7 sections and 4 rows = 560 single slots x 3.5 frames 1960 address.
if only 50% are double slots that makes 2940 address

If that's just the sequenced mail then that doesn't surprise me, with the work coming into MCs later, more mail is missing the sequencing as it's now been run on an IMP/iLSM (seperated into batches) after the time the relevant batch has been run on a CSSpostslippete wrote:And I also believe that a Rural duty with under 300 calls and fewer mail/packets and more adept to this one wave of mech strategy that the company are planning. Posting unsigned letters is no problem packets and signed for letters take time the more DPs the more chance of packets and signed for letters so i would rather have less DPs. The most important thing is people being in i can get done earlier on a Saturday and on school holidays. I work it out as 160 per hour for me but that includes high rise flats that do not take long.
