Residents in Astra Close stopped receiving post a month ago after a dog attacked a postman twice whilst he was trying to deliver letters and parcels.

Residents at a block of flats in Hornchurch have been left without post for over month after their postman was attacked twice by a dog in one of the houses.

Around 12 homes in Astra Close stopped receiving their post at the start of june, and have been told they now need to go and collect it from the Post Office in Hornchurch - which is a few miles away.

Royal Mail have said that they are in contact with the police, the building owner and the owner of the dog to try and stop any more attacks happening.

Once it has been assured that safety measures are in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again, then post will start to be delivered again.

Daniel Wills, 33 from Astra Close, lives with Staffordshire Bull Terrier Blue, and says he has been having to make the trip to Hornchurch at least once a week to check if he has any post.

When he visited his local post office the manager apparently told him that he couldn’t do anything about it.

Daniel also said that there’s a lady in his flat who is disabled and waiting on important letters about doctor’s appointments.

He said: “It’s really annoying.
“Why can’t they just find another postman who will deliver our post.

“If he doesn’t like dogs then he is doing the wrong job.”

Another resident said: “I’ve only moved in a month ago and haven’t been to collect my post yet because it’s such an inconvenience.

“I can’t be bothered to go all the way to Hornchurch.

“I might have been sent in moving in cards or presents but I wouldn’t know because I don’t have the time to go down there.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Deliveries were suspended on June 1 to 11 addresses in a block of flats in Astra Close, Hornchurch, following a second dog attack by the same dog on one of our postal workers.

“The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and we only suspend deliveries as a last resort when the safety of our staff is at risk.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience this has caused.

“We have written to customers to inform them that they can collect their mail from Hornchurch Delivery Office in Abbs Cross Gardens.

“We are in contact with the police, the building owner and the owner of the dog to try and prevent any further attacks on our people whilst delivering the mail. “The suspension will be lifted once we are reassured that sufficient measures have been put in place to secure the dog and eliminate any further risk of injury to our delivery staff.”
