The Post Office has said they are looking for a temporary Postmaster willing to provide a service for Cullompton.

Recently the leader of Mid Devon District Council wrote to the Post Office after it closed on June 12 at short notice.

Stuart Taylor from the Post Office said in a letter to Cullompton Town Council: “The latest is that we have secured permission from the current operator and their landlord to use the premises if we can find a temporary Postmaster willing to provide a service from the site.

“My colleagues in the relevant team are completing this temporary Postmaster search. I have asked to be kept informed of progress and will write again when I have further news. We have been asked to provide a mobile service to the town in the meantime, but unfortunately, we don’t have a mobile Post Office in the area with any spare capacity to commence visits to Cullompton, without ceasing existing services to other communities.

“Using a temporary Postmaster working from the existing premises is the most straightforward and quickest way to restore service, so this remains, for now, the focus of my colleagues’ attention.

“Whilst I’m sorry that I don’t have more positive news, I would like to reassure you, the Council and constituents that we are totally committed to see Post Office services restored to the community at the earliest opportunity.

“The matter that saw the branch close in the first instance is still the subject of an ongoing investigation, however I am advised that a decision on this is due in the next week, so we will then be clearer on next steps. My colleagues involved in the case fully understand the need to complete their work as soon as possible.”
