This isnt helping the bigger picture... Ive seen the working conditions and living conditions in both inner and outer London..

Yes we all need more money to live in this country but dont fall in to the trap that the WAYBACKWARD brought to us...

The people who RM & CWU wanted to bring up to the £300 pw level was basicaly taken from the People earning more thru Inner London weighting... This was another feck up in the deal like this time... LONDON had a vote on INNER&OUTER LONDON WEIGHTING THAT was taken in when the vOTE ON THE WAY BACKWARD CAME IN.... WE was shafted twice..... I feel the CWU miss sold us the deal and the ones that got a ballot (not many) had there heads turned by the vote just for The Waybackward...

I know EAST LONDON SAID NO.... I said NO... everyone i know in The job said NO......

THE VOTE SAID OTHERWISE...!!! ME THINKS....


All i know... To travel, live and work in London.. I was skint....

The level of debate on this site never ceases to amaze me. London Weighting has been paid for decades on the basis that it costs more to work and live in the capital. That is a fact that every independent report, whether its by Coroner independent research, the government or Labour research identifies, that it costs on average 30% more to live in and work in London then it does in the rest of the UK. The crucial word there is average as there are other differences right around the country.

This information is not just based on house prices but transport costs, child care costs ,plumbing costs as well as numerous other essential costs. In fact in places outside London, some cities/towns are still in receipt of a RRIS payment based on recruitment and retention difficulties.

As for the comment that London is not interested in National pay bargaining, this is complete rubbish. The fact is that London was the only division in the country who achieved a yes vote in the National ballot in 2003 over pay and major change. That is the ballot where the union achieved a national NO vote and stared into the abyss where management were refusing to negotiate with the CWU and were introducing change locally.

Fortunately the London membership at the same time achieved a massive YES vote in pursuance of an increase in London weighting and took 2 days official action which then led to the biggest unofficial dispute since the miners strike. This unofficial dispute spread outside of London to such places as Coventry, Oxford, Portsmouth, Warrington and Southend to name a few.

This dispute got the CWU back in negotiations and led to the Pay and Major Change agreement which introduced the £26.28 payment, which was the biggest single pay rise ever. It also introduced the biggest London Weighting rise ever which also stated that London weighting would increase by the percentage level of future pay increases.

No doubt we will get a load of responses saying that they live in a more expensive house or they live next door to a London OPG. However London Weighting is paid for people working in London, not neccessarily living in London.

Even the CWU in their subsistance rates pays a higher rate for staying in London then the rest of the country.

I hope this explains the facts behind London Weighting and that it supports National Pay bargaining rather then seeks to remove it. Sensible reponses are invited.

not bitter thommo, we are having a light hearted chat, your right, it,s expensive where ever you live on postal wages. with the amount of private proccessing being done by uk mail tnt ect there will be less and less postmen working in london. the drain on rm finances to pay these extra payments will diminish. it would be just like rm to end london weighting via a national vote further down the line. hence i feel that we need basic pay consolidated accross the country rather than isolated pay increases.
