What they need to do to save time is get machines that can cut down on time spent on IPS and flats this is where a lot of time is wasted IMO. Also at the moment coded bundles are never completely correct I'd guess between 25% and 5% of a coded bundle are usually wrong I cant see sequenced bundles being any better.

Why is RM wasting money on machines that will only save 5-10 minutes out of a duty of 8 hours. How many years will it take for the investment put into these WSM machines to ever payback the cost?

If you want to make real savings invest in Flat & Packet sorting machines first.

I am pretty sure they are investing in flats & packets as well. If they are not then senior mgmt should be sacked.

Flats & expecially packets is currently hugely labour intensive and major savings could be made in this area. Then RM can pack more on the mules each day :-)

However, due to the inability of management to manage the modest time savings gained by WSMs so far very little tangible benefits have been seen in the DO, as most part-timers are either preparing their own walks to some degree or are coming into a pile of mail to prep at 10:00.

I think you are right, with the new technology comes change - and the easiest way RM can get "flexibility" is through part time workers or those on short term agency contracts. It has happened at so many companies and may well already be happening at ours.

These machines are not for "now" they are for the future -1 ready packed bag left at lots of mums houses to be delivered when the kids are at school,maybe an hours work per person per day.
