It’s all well and good saying ok well take 20% but if I’m on a duty I don’t know particularly well and half way through a loop there’s 5d2ds how am I meant to know where to put them?
We would start doing D2Ds precisely how RM wanted them to be done and not how most of us have delivered them up til now. So you would prep 17% or 20% per day then deliver ALL of those D2Ds on that same day whether you had any other mail for those properties or not. So there would not be five odd lots of D2Ds that you are confused about where to deliver to.
We would no longer be able to deliver most of the D2Ds on Mondays or earlier in the week. Also no more shenanigans such as throwing up some D2D AFTER you have completed the delivery so a different postie has to deliver them the following day.

I'm still reading through and digesting the comments to the OP but a radical idea has come to mind.
In this scenario we still have the walk frames that we have now. What if we just told them to **** right *** back to hell and we prepped the first lot of sequenced letters into the frame??? This would save time versus f***-arsing around on the bench trying to sort letters as if they were a deck of 52 playing cards???

Only if you believe saving time is the goal.
Smaller frame - more space = more DOs under one roof and therefore more real estate to sell.
1) What is the goal if it isn't saving time? Cutting jobs in the MCs?
2) If we are expected to throw the mail we sort on IPS plus the second lot of sequenced mail into our walk frames then they cannot be made smaller. Unless they went to two addresses per slot which would be purgatory.

It would more than likely be road sorted, keeping the bulky RM2000 frames for10% of the mail in the long term would be ridiculous.

So its pissing it down and blowing a gale,

On the street I merge wave 1 with wave 2(prepped in frame) add in my D2D and get my parcel ready together with my PDA.

Where do I place the 3 bundles and a parcel whilst filling out my P739 in the rain?

From what I can gather it would be merged indoor first and you would have two bundles, one mail-one D2D although I'm pretty sure outdoor merging is/will be trailed.

Unfortunately those who believe that carrying a bundle of D2D at the back of your bundle of mail is acceptable are thinking back to the old days of nice tidy bundles of mainly letters tied up with string not the mixed jumble of bits and bobs that make up a bundle today. It's a hard enough job trying to hold that together in one hand while trying to scan(for the fourth time) a 2D barcode and at the same time keep your wits about you for the dog that launches itself at you as the door is opened. What the union is thinking about, I have no idea. Delivery has faced far more change than any other function and yet here we go again, another way to make the job harder.

Perhaps there will be some sort of multi bundle waistcoat, with pockets for each bundle?

Delivery Method Trials and its impact

I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent fella.
I have been a postman for 18 years.
I have delivered all types of mail under lots of different conditions from very light days, to very heavy days.
I have delivered in snow, ice, rain and blazing hot sunshine.
I see things everyday that could be improved and save Royal mail money.
I have never thought to myself 'do you know what, why don't we merge these d2d's into the sequence mail without using a frame.
I have never thought 'how about we add our flats, manual letters, small parcels and wave 2 sequenced into the sequenced mail without using a frame.
After reading about the trials above, I am quite frankly horrified that they seem to be 'going ahead ' with something that resembles the above ideas.
Unless i have completely mis-understood this whole concept, it sounds like utter madness.
So we will have a box of sequenced, we then empty that out onto a bench, then add in everything else by 'flicking' through?
So for every packet, flat, or unsequenced letter, we then need to spend a few seconds for each item looking for the right spot to put it in?
We will have to deliver the full days d2d's for that day because their would be no way of knowing which houses you had delivered them to otherewise?
Is this a joke?

The CWU does not have a veto to change. When 48 /56 box fitting used to be the only way to prep a walk we could not stop them changing to first wing prep frames and than prep 2000 frames.

This time in many mail centres work is available earlier than ever before. Network 2018 has been designed to ensure more work is available in the night to be dispatch to delivery units.

Since 2010 walk sequencing has moved from the initial split of 60% on the first wave and 40% on the second to an average of 75% on the first wave. However the national negotiators have look at what is available in a mail centre prior to mid night and it is much greater than 75%. This is why to get a shorter working week processing staff will have re-allignment of duties which will put pressure on early shifts to be reduced and moved to late shifts , also twi- light duties will be increased along with proposals for later finishes on the late shift or back shift.

Royal Mail believe they can move the average of 75% on first wave to nearer 90%. Within the external mediation this is what Royal Mail were pushing and hence why they wanted delivery staff to start later to ensure that 90% was available for delivery offices. The CWU defeated this.

However Royal Mail believe it is in-efficent to pay for automation and for the work to be than sorted again into a frame. They are no alone , every other European country now bench mergers or something similar.

The CWU does not believe that there is as much of a saving as 25 minutes hence why there is a trial. At the end of the trial there has to ben a new National Agreement which you will have a chance to vote for.

However lets be clear if you really thing we are going to stop Royal Mail wanting to remove the use of frames as more work moves to the first wave than your mistaken.

This is why the CWU were looking for a 35 hour working week because this was the agenda of Royal Mail even since the Walsall trial and they believe that by not sorting the first wave into a frame will save them time on every walk.

Remember there are 8 different offices trialling different delivery methods. The one Stoke Newington does not involve any outdoor merging from first wave to second wave,. The only thing which will be merged outside will be d2d and than only 17% per day.

The message I am getting is that Royal Mail are asking the CWU for certain things and the Union are either agreeing, not agreeing, trialling etc. Fine nothing wrong with that.

But.

How about the Union asking their own members what they want. Radical thought I know, and there will be some daft responses, but you never know we, the people who do the job, might know a better way to do it.

If the Union really want to engage members then just offering the power of veto ain't gonna help.

can't believe all this, is it not taking a step back, we are already getting unsequenced mail on 2nd wave on a tuesday as the dom wants to save more cash, i honestly cant see this saving royal mail time or money,

think the union needs to get our input the folks that actually do the job, and i wont be carrying one of them pouches pictured above not with my shoulder.
