Trading Standards return thousands of pounds to victims of heartless thieves

MONEY has been handed back to Cumbrians who fell foul of conmen – with one victim receiving more than £20,000.

Trading Standards officials revealed the staggering amount given to one person targeted by fraudsters as the service spoke on the issue.

They said post was intercepted by Royal Mail to allow cheques to be returned to consumers caught out by scams.

The results of the cases emerged as officials stressed the dangers, with this month being Scam Awareness Month.

This campaign aims to create a network of confident, alert consumers who don’t miss a trick when it comes to scams.

Cumbria Trading Standards says these are a growing problem and is encouraging consumers to be vigilant and report and talk about them.

Cumbria county councillor Celia Tibble is the authority’s cabinet member for Trading Standards.

She said: “The stakes are high with financial and legal scams as you can end up losing your life savings or pension fund.

“I am delighted that Cumbria Trading Standards have been able to return a substantial amount of money to our residents.

“While there might be new scams cropping up all the time, the tactics of scammers remain the same.

“When you get approached about any investment, don’t rush into anything without making sure it’s legitimate first, particularly when you’re contacted out of the blue.”

Experts estimate 48 per cent of people in the UK have been targeted by a scam.

Contact trading standards we had someone from there in wtl telling us to contact them if we suspected anyone of being targeted

We did mate, all they could do was take the details down of the ones we knew about. There was loads when we decluttered her house.

They could have come and spoken to her but she wouldn't retain the information or believe them! I tried, her daughter tried, her other daughter (my partner) tried too!

She's started receiving them again now at her new address!
