Working Hours

Hi all,

A delivery office nearby is recruiting for Postmen & women with driving.

On the advert it states "you will work from 06:15 to 14:15". Which is an 8 hour day. That's between 35 - 37.5 hour week if you take into account lunch break.

Yet further down it says the role is part time 26.5 hours per week.

See how things don't quite add up?

Does it mean you will work flexible hours between 06:15 - 14:15? (In which case it should be more clear)

Ideally I am looking for something full time but it seems RM don't take on full time staff for this role anymore from any of the adverts I have seen.

That's not actually that bad. Some adverts are for 20-25 hours between 7am & 6pm Mon-Sat. No F/T positions are advertised - in theory you could make it up with O/T but not guaranteed and you may have to work outside contracted hours.

That's interesting to know.

I'd prefer guaranteed hours, what do other Posties do to fill a 40 hour week in order to pay the bills if they can't get the overtime?

Generally O/T has always been available for those that want it and in theory contract hours should increase the longer you stay with RM to reflect this. If someone HAS to do 40hrs guaranteed every week then this probably isn't the right job.

Agree with the above poster. There will always be plenty of overtime over the course of the year but it's as and when. April and May there was no overtime at all and i was stuck on part time hours. Silly me getting used to the previous half year, which i was doing 50/60+ hours constantly.

Do not apply for a part time job if you cannot live on that income.

Sorry, a bit late in replying here. I keep thinking about this each time I see that there are opportunities available near me. It's just the part-time hours that make me hesitate.

You would be looking at a guaranteed yearly salary of around £12k without overtime initially, pay increasing with longevity.

When you have a mortgage, bills to pay etc surely you would need to rely on regular overtime just to make ends meet?

Just interested to see how you current posties make that work for you?
