Royal Mail van involved in rush-hour crash on A1 in Gateshead

One lane of the A1 is blocked after a Royal Mail van collided with a car in Gateshead during rush-hour.

Police and paramedics have blocked off the inside lane on the motorway shortly before the Lobley Hill slip road.


The collision is believed to have happened shortly after 8am, with the crashed vehicles remaining at the scene almost an hour later.

Despite the crash happening during rush-hour, traffic wasn’t too badly affected, with only a short stretch of the slip road blocked off.

The North East Ambulance Service said that one person was looked at by paramedics at the scene of the A1 crash, but that no one needed to be taken to hospital.


A spokeswoman said: “We were called at 8.30am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 in the Lobley Hill area between junctions 68 and 69.

“We dispatched a rapid response paramedic who assessed one patient, but no one was taken to hospital.”

Northumbria Police have been contacted for comment.
