Boxford campaigners fail to convince Royal Mail to keep postman in village

Boxford residents, who campaigned to keep their popular village postman, say they will keep a close eye on the standard of service, after failing to convince Royal Mail to change course.

Villagers have fought over the last two months to stop Royal Mail from relocating postman Kevin Pike, who has served Boxford for eight years, to another round.

However, despite a letter-writing campaign and a petition signed by 509 people, the re-allocation of rounds is set to go ahead, as part of a restructuring of operations in the Sudbury area.

In a letter written to Boxford campaigner David Lamming, Royal Mail executive Christine Drewitt said: “I do realise that you and the residents of Boxford have received an excellent level of service from Kevin Pike.

“We stand by our commitment to maintain a high standard of service to all our customers during the changes in Sudbury.

“While we understand the reservations voiced by residents in Boxford, we rely on all members of staff to support the necessary changes in our operations.”

But Mr Lamming told the Free Press: “It’s all very well for them to acknowledge the exceptional service from Kevin, but they aren’t going to do anything about it.

“It’s frustrating. When you get Royal Mail saying all of our postman are trained the same, but it’s not a matter of training. It’s a matter of getting to know the area and the people.

“We will now be monitoring the kind of service we get very closely.”

As has been pointed out before it isn't solely RM who is moving this postie from this walk and it is possible other Postie's from his DO will also be moving to different walks. It is the resign system using seniority (How many years a postie has worked for RM.) which is actively supported by some Postie's and the union as being a reasonable system to use. It may even be the case that seniority was introduced by the union in the first place. RM could probably try and get rid of the seniority system but there would likely be uproar from a percentage of the workforce.
It's sort of like capitalism which is a wasteful and corrupt system but if you decide to change it then what to and would it be better?
