Report on the state of the Walk Sequencing Trials

It was clear from the meeting with management at the beginning of August that they considered that the trials of the walk sequencing machines had been a success and that they were planning to go ahead with ordering around 530. They also felt they were now in a position to indicate where they thought the machines should go, a detail that has yet to be communicated to us nationally but appears to be common knowledge in the field. They also indicated that their preferred option was for the bulk of walk sequencing to be performed in mail centres using legacy equipment, â€œintelligentâ€

So now it look's like 7am or 8am or maybe 9am starts this is madness where in god's earth do they get these clown's from if this is the future then royalmail can go to hell it is already half way there if the press get wind of this all sh*t will hit the fan this is not a service or even a buisness it is a JOKE!.

So why the hell on earth do they seam so intent in sacking /pissing off all the best and draging in the nuppty's in our office this plaice will be like the mary ceiclest if they carry on cutting.

I can tell you something - it's bloody amazing how much information is suddenly coming to light.

Course it will still be a NO vote no matter how pally people suddenly appear to be!

If these machines can break down or be unreliable I wonder whether management will have SPARE machines sited in parallel???

My observations so far would indicate that cost cutting measures would NOT allow for necessary contingencies to cover unexpected events. I.E. Already I have seen NO spare bikes, NO spare vans, NO spare equipment of ANY type!!!

What in incompetent way to run a company.

And no pouch boxes being installed even though there are a dozen of the things rusting away in the garage at our place.

Sounds like even later delivery times to me.

If the new technology = faster sorting then that's all good - but at what cost to public service and posties?

Flexibility could be used to extend your day to accomodate late arrival of mail from poorly performing/broken machines.

All these WSMs will be sited in DOs, and will be paired to both minimise down-time and spares holdings.
Don't know about bikes and vans, but there will be adequate spares available.
Don't know why someone described them as "crap" either. The Dutch etc seem to find them very reliable. Maybe it's just the age-old PO problem of the least competent/able/interested staff get to run the machines, rather than selection by ability?

There are no contingency plans or equipment, when it breaks down we fail. That is the same with all their planning there is no spare capacity. If something goes wrong it fails. They'd rather spend the time fighting with their own staff than providing a service to the public.

I am not 100% sure of the reference to the Dutch model, but Selektmail use a system to walksort mail. They are able to do this because they walk sequence the mail at the print facility using information supplied regarding the delivery route details. This means they can send out the mail in readymade oder and then throw it into frames. It should be noted that they are a private company (owned by Deutschepost) and are not so interested in non-standard mail.

I think the overall point is that the concept of walk-sequencing will be coming to the UK as RM needs to compete on a level technological footing as the private companies.

As for using existing LSMs and them not working, I would assume that is what trials are for. As for the reporting by management of them being better than they are, well that isn't a surprise as sometimes you want to interpret the statistics for a pre-determined direction.

RM have being trying to use a hot-house method of trying things in a small number of areas, rather than try and do everything in a big-bang fashion. The company should be commended for attempting to drag an out-of-date service into the 21st century.
