I recently applied for a postman job advertised at 25 hours over 5 hours with a rotating day off from the hours of 6am-6pm, and I'm hoping to get some clarification on the hours etc.
I was told that although the advert is based at 1 location that the job could cover 3 of the local delivery offices as the manager sees fit.
1. Will it be a guaranteed 6am start every day at the differing locations?
2. Will the job be a minimum of 5 hours a day JUST doing deliverys from the 6am start? (ie not including collections etc)?
3. Will I be expected to cover the different offices at short notice and be doing any rounds that are available at last minute?
In general I suppose - what would be expected from this kind of set-up to be doing in a typical week? (ie covering sickness and holdiay etc)
Thanks

1. No.
2. Yes, the job will be a minimum of 5 hours per day on 5 days out of 6 basis. It may be deliveries or collection or a combination of both.
3, Yes. You'll normally get at least 24 hours warning, but not always.
What they have done is hired you on a flexible minimum 25 hours contract, and they can use you for 5 hours a day (more if YOU want) at ANY time between 6am and 6 pm. Its unlikely you'll actually work 12 hours a day unless they really need you too or/and you want to.

Some clarification regarding advertised job
With a minimum of 5 hours a day I don't see how this can be split between deliveries/collections in 5 hours alone with the advert stating a round will last 4 hours? Would I be expected to do say 2.5 hours in the morning and 2.5 in the afternoon if I am to do collections? (I'm assuming collections alone don't take 5 hours)TrueBlueTerrier wrote:1. No.

Also with this type of position, is it likely to eventually get a set routine once settled?

You could be doing a whole round, or part of a round.Kimg wrote:With a minimum of 5 hours a day I don't see how this can be split between deliveries/collections in 5 hours alone with the advert stating a round will last 4 hours? You could be delivering parcels for a few hours then finishing on collections.
You could be doing all 5 hours on collections.
You might be asked to work 2.5 hours in the morning and afternoon, that is indeed possible.
Its possible you might get into a set routine, it's also possible as a reserve (which is what you will be) you might be doing different tasks and different rounds every day.
To be honest, there are 1400+ Delivery Offices around the country and we can only generalise and there are probably 1400+ managers doing it the way they want to.

I completely understand that all the DO's will be different but just wanted to get a better understanding of what the job entails for the hours.
