Sister of Dundee postie Jeff to embark on charity walk in bid to help others

The sister of a Dundee postman who died from a rare type of cancer is set to walk from his grave to St Andrews in a fundraising effort.

Jeff Li, of the Dens Road area, woke up one day in a lot of pain in the area around his left hip.

Doctors thought he had suffered nerve damage as a result of being on his feet for long periods.

But when painkillers didn’t work, Jeff — who also worked at The Pearl Chinese takeaway on Clepington Road before becoming a postman — went to A&E.

After having scans, he was told he had giant cell sarcoma of the left proximal femur.

Although Jeff had an operation to remove the tumour, the pain returned soon after. The tumour was found to have spread to the bottom of his spine.

A course of radiotherapy seemed to work initially but the tumour then spread up Jeff’s spine and into his lungs and he died a short time later at the age of 33.

Now his sister Mei, 32, is set to be joined by 15 of his friends to walk from his final resting place at Birkhill Cemetery to St Andrews where the siblings grew up.

Mei said she wanted to raise awareness of the disease and the work of the charity, given the rarity of Jeff’s condition.

She said: “We are going to walk from Jeff’s grave at Birkhill Cemetery to St Andrews – it’s about 24 miles.

“Doctors didn’t know how to diagnose Jeff so we are hoping to raise as much money and awareness as we can.

“That is the driving force behind it. If we do this then maybe another family won’t have to go through what we did.

“We are training as much as we can. I have been walking up the Law and I am going to walk across the Tay Road Bridge.

“Then we will walk from Birkhill to the bridge.

“After that we will do a 10-mile walk before we do the main trek to St Andrews.”

Mei’s charity walk is set to take place on June 26.

The group will have a stop at Tentsmuir with a barbecue to refuel before tackling the rest of the journey.
