Can 'they' see 'real time' exactly where you are?
Or is it more case of logging the time and location every time the PDA is used?
Im sure they could do but i think the doms will get the information the next day on a dashboard showing the data
As I understand its both.
The PDA sends "breadcrumbs" on a set interval somewhere between 1 and 3 minutes which can be viewed live by the DOM.
This data is then used to format a report based on parameters set by the person requesting the data. AFAIK it goes from individual duty level, through postcode, Delivery Office all the way to the whole country. Of course, a local DOM wouldn't be allowed to have access to a national report unless it was required by his duties.
What is a breadcrumb?
A “breadcrumb” (or “breadcrumb trail”) is a type of secondary navigation scheme that reveals the user’s location in a website or Web application. The term comes from the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale in which the two title children drop breadcrumbs to form a trail back to their home. Just like in the tale, breadcrumbs in real-world applications offer users a way to trace the path back to their original landing point.

All it will do is make postie's do the job complely by the book ie using trolleys , having Thier breaks, van checks, not rushing to finish early, trying neighbors with packets etc. The way your supposed to do the job. There will be no point finishing early , all they will do is send you out with more work. So instead of them thinking we will get more out of people they will get less, more cutting off, less loops to deliver etc. They will track everybody over time, the early finishers, the we can't completers etc. But in the long run it should be beneficial, we all should be doing exactly the same amount of work, all walks the same time etc. It should work out fair !!!!!!.
But if all walks are equal why should somebody who works at a slower pace be paid more for doing the same work assuming everyone will be doing the the job "properly"? Why should they get excess overtime when someone else finishes on time? You can see why royal mail want us to own the workload, which im sure they will get at some point
All walks are not equal!!!!! I'm on a van share duty and my sharing partners walk has 200 calls LESS than my walk!!!!!

Try it with your mobile phone guys and see. No wonder I have to get in my van and a 6 pack off McCoys empty crisps bag face me every time I take my day off.
and I would be careful in doing anything like that as you may find yourself in the office trying to explain why it wasn't on , so why would you do that ? do you have something to hide ? do you use the methods , take a break , and do you work your paid hours ? I think its a good thing as it will even dutys out in the office and if they cant they may have to invest and put more in , simple.
So if they use this to even duties out but some people still take hours more to deliver there rounds should they be able to claim overtime if others can complete? Or should they be told they can't claim because they are obviously just slow as all the rounds are equal and other people can get done on time?
A round that some say is too big is often fine when someone else does it,and I'm not talking about a runner being on it so should that round be made smaller just because some people work slower? Some rounds would have to be tiny for some people in my office to complete them on time and that's just because they are slow
it all boils down to the way people work using the equipment and taking breaks , we cant complete our delivery within our time any day BUT on our day off they put 2 elite posties on it and surprise they get done and they do extra , but that doesn't mean we are s**t at our job or tossing it off , as our day off cover come in at least 40 mins before there time , don't have a meal break and run round with bags on there backs and not use lwt , and we did get tested over 2 years ago and was 2 loops to big and they never took anything off but added an extra loop on (which we don't touch ) so the pdas will show all this and if your covering the same ground twice , ie delivery pkts and parcels out the van , so if there are elite posties taking short cuts to get a flyer the they will kop for more work to take them up to there paid hours .

no they cant but that info will be downloaded the next day , and the pdas map everywhere you go every call etc and not just when you use it , also when it is static as well.

not all dutys are equal and miles out and that's what they got for dims , planners and georoute putting s**t information in to get the savings they wanted , well it will be all done off the pdas , so do you think its ok for posties sat at home at 13.00 or getting paid o/t within they paid daily hours ? when there still on pay till 15.00 ?
No your right the duties in nearly every office are all over the place, the rural duties in my office are a peace of piss, the towns are massive in comparison. PDA actuas should in theory make all walks about even. That's in theory though, you and me know that won't really happen though it's sort of a doms dream. Things will probably stay as shite as ever.
Nothing will change when the PDA actuals come in. I finish before my time now and will continue to do so. Making the work load even doesn’t mean giving good posties more work than the rubbish ones. Just because I am good at my job why should I carry the ones who are deliberately slow? I will argue all day long about it and will win every time.
I can see it now,any postie that the DOM has got it in for he will watch every move they make and any excuse will be down on them like a ton of bricks!
LaggyBand wrote:The bottom line to all of this turns on the following:
When these PDA actuals come in, if you walk twice as slow and cut off, can anything actually be done by management to prevent you doing so?
The answer must be yes, else why would they be bringing it in?
And that mechanism is where the trouble is.
what can he do ? its there on the pdas and its nothing to do with him , if the powers above are saying you've got 100 working hours and theres only 70 hours showing on the mapping on the pdas , who do you think it will hit ? the posties working there hours or going over or the band of elite posties sat at home on pay ?
