#1 NEVER leave packets unattended
#2 if you have time or think youll have time, sure try neighbours, if at the end of your duty and you stlll have time maybe go back and try and deliver then try some neighbours.
#3 if you return to the office on time, with lots of 739s then its clear you dont have time to go up and down each street trying to get them delivered no matter what the DOM says. If youre getting back early with 739s, then i can see the DOMs point of view.

We get this every day when we get back.."why didnt you try neighbours" I did try neighbours but then ran out of time thus meaning if i carried on trying neighbours it would have meant id have gone over my contracted hours and im not prepared to extend so made the decision to p739 packets in the latter part of the duty enabling me to finish on time.."its royal mail standard its not your choice you have to do as you are told its a reasonable request"..please read the national agreement Mr.Dim as it clearly states 'yes try neighbours as its royal mail standard aslong as the postman feels it safe to do so and its at the postmans discretion. Oh look at the time would you believe it bang on my finish time see ya. Wave to the dim and leave the building.

I guess delivery to a neighbor is just anothe tool to use if needed, but you’d think they’d re invented the wheel,we’ve been doing for years, please don’t big this job up,it’s not rocket science,I guess people who have there own rounds have a heads up as to where to leave stuff securely etc,it’s that local knowledge thing that you tend to get when your in contact with your customers on a daily basis,am well aware it’s not like that for everyone, and we all have our remit on what we will and won’t do on delivery etc.and as usual management will add there sarcastic twist on what we do and how we do it from there years of experience at the coal face delivering, mmmmm

Quite right.
However ,what do you do if you are in a shared van duty, and the other half decides they don't want to walk the final loop so they will try 20 neighbour's for one packet. So far gone you end up driving to deliver a card to number 46 to say your packet is at no. 6.?

There's a guy in my office that does that. Will try the whole street then on his day off the original destination will have a go at someone else for leaving his packet 30 doors down the street. That's not a neighbour. That's someone with the same postcode.

The neighbour is really defined as the house directly opposite and the house either side of the addressee as long as the houses are pretty close together. Or if it is a close and you know the people are all friendly then maybe try a little further. Going further than that will not please your customers. Generally my customers are mostly always in to accept stuff or they have an agreed safe place. It's when nearly all your customers go to work that there will be more problems obviously.

Can't find that official definition ?
Common sense of course ,but when you work with a fruit loop with his own agenda who hates walking and thinks the use of lwt's instantly makes him a faggot or a republican ,then you run into try 40 neighbours mode

Out of interest, after delivering do you use the neighbour cards? I just use a 739. What's the point of having the 'with your neighbour' box on the card if we're meant to use the other ones?! More to carry.

I have always found the small square 'with your neighbour' cards have a sort of film on them makes writing on them difficult. So I use the P739 cards instead to leave a parcel in a safe place or with a neighbour. I write 'PTO' in the address box then on the reverse I write the date and a message in the blank area in the middle.
