That's what conference is for - so the members via their reps can tell the Union what they want.
Our rep has bogged off to this as usual, and he's off now for two weeks, he hasn't spoken to a soul in our office about him going to conference and neither has the Area Rep who actually paid us a visit a fortnight ago (only because somebody was up for the chop ) and probably won't be seen again until near Christmas.
There is very little asking or bothering what the members actually want to put to conference.
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.
Branches need to become more accountable to the membership. It's our weakest point and at the moment there is no impetus for change, the old boys club and watching your own backs culture has to be overhauled.
My fear is it won't be and when we really do need them, they'll be nothing but a talking shop and a glorified nodding dog workers council.

I don’t believe for a milli second that any reps or area reps go to conference and forward the opinion of ANY members views collated for debate at conference. They throw support behind pre organised agenda fixing, with little to no interest in what effects the ordinary members day to day problems. Conference decides what feeds the ego of out of touch union officials, far removed from reality of what members endure while working* for RM.

Good idea methinks.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

Why not, they need a wake up call.
I said to our rep (who is a nice bloke by the way who does his best in very difficult circumstances)why doesn't the union photocopy the survey we were given and ask people to copy there answers and give them to him and get all the opinions, not just the one or two selected ones as usual.I offered to help him and compile the results with him but nothing.

I think its time to bite the bullet and find another job which is a shame as i have always loved the job.
This is so sad but true, most posties love the job,its the way they are treated by management that stinks!

We've been saying this since 2007 on here, no doubt pre 2007 in canteens across the business the same convo was going on.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been. My BFF Clash The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I have to say that I don't agree with what you. I have been to conference as a Area Rep on many, many occasions and the branch I am with has on many occasions voted against the Headquarters policy and if need be against the policy of the division. We always make our own Branch policy that reflects the best interest of our members. We take unit reps to conference as part of the branch delegation so that they can understand the workings of conference. So that they can see that if there is a issue they or the members in their unit have it can be put as a motion to conference and could if accepted change the course of the union. I am certainly not an out of touch union official as you say and nor are the unit reps in my Area and I am not far removed from the reality of what our members endure day in and day out, Every day it is a battle with this business to defend the members of this union not only for unit reps but for area reps and so on. So you can believe for a milli second that reps do go to conference with the best intentions of representing their member interests. Its about time people like yourself stopped berating reps in this union at every chance they get. Its a difficult job for any rep to do at any level, thats why there are few people that want to take on the task. Still I suppose it is far easier to criticise than to actually take the role up and try and make a difference.

If the members in your office want to know what what happened at conference ask the rep for a report when he comes back from a/l. if you don't get one go to the Area Rep. If you still don't get one go to the Brach. Its not that hard to do.
But where has the CWU been for us in the past I fought battles and was fobbed off as a lone worrier not good have had my fill of battles as you see the only thing that can make the union relevant is get behind those who fight for the cause but in my case it was sadly lacking this is the new CWU time will tell!

this, exactly.
Who wants a shorter working week? Sorry to change the subject slightly but this was new to our office, we are happy with the way things are but with all the new builds going up we need to be looking at making rounds shorter by creating new duties, not taking time off the time we have to finish in as for many thats aleady not possible.
