GERMAN police have confirmed that a man matching Liam Colgan’s description spotted holding a sign saying “help get me home” was not the missing postie.

The man was seen at a train station near Hamburg last month, but police have said the man was trying to get to Romania.


It comes as German police admit they are baffled by the disappearance of Liam Colgan.

A desperate search has been launched for the postie, 29, from Inverness after he vanished on his brother’s stag do last month.

Friends and relatives last saw him in a bar in the Reeperbahn area of the city before he walked off alone in the early hours of February 10.

Liam was recorded on CCTV being helped by a passer-by while appearing to be “heavily intoxicated” later that night.


But there have only been unconfirmed sightings of him since.

And now cops have confirmed that the man spotted at a train station near Hamburg is not Liam Colgan.

A German police source said: “Of course, the missing person case is still open. If relevant information comes in we check it out.

“But, at the moment, we are at a point where we no longer know where we should look for him. That’s the problem.


“So, in fact, we don’t have any specific information as to what might have happened.

“We have done a lot and repeatedly looked for him with trail dogs. We have also reconstructed where he may have walked.

“But unfortunately this hasn’t lead to us finding information on his whereabouts.”

Liam’s brother, police officer Eamonn Colgan, 33, of Carnoustie, has postponed his wedding while the search continues.


The missing Scot was set to be best man and had organised the stag do in Hamburg.

Eamonn, 33, of Broughty Ferry, Dundee, said: “We are by no means giving up the search.

“As much as things may seem quieter right now, we are still doing a lot of work in the background to try and trace him.

“We are satisfied that the police in Germany are following all leads that are given to them.


“I think we are just reiterating what we’ve been saying the whole time. We want people throughout Germany and beyond to remain on the lookout for Liam.

“If Liam reads this he needs to know that everyone is desperate to get him home.”

Liam’s family continue to run a fundraiser to allow some members to remain in Hamburg to look for him.

The German postal service agreed to deliver 300,000 leaflets across Hamburg after Liam’s family paid for the printing costs.
