Royal Mail said they are working with police ‘due to the serious nature of the incident’

Residents in Bristol received a letter from Royal Mail saying postmen would not deliver to two streets following a serious incident.

Royal Mail suspended the deliveries to properties on Heron Road and St Marks road in Easton due to an ‘unacceptably high risk’ to postmen delivering to those addresses.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said one of their postmen was “seriously threatened” by a customer and police asked them to stop deliveries to the area.

Police confirmed Keith Mayo, 36, of St Marks Road had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Mayo appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and using threatening, abuse or insulting words intending to and cause harassment, alarm or distress.

He will appear in Bristol Crown Court at a later date.

Following the police statement, Royal Mail said deliveries were to be reinstated from Tuesday, April 10.

The letter
“You may already be aware that a Royal Mail post person was involved in an incident in your area recently.

“As a result, a health and safety risk assessment was undertaken and confirmed that the level of risk associated with delivering to your property was unacceptably high due to the threat of further customer abuse.

“Royal Mail will carry out its own further investigations into the circumstances surrounding this incident and we will be working with those involved and local police.

“However I’m very sorry to advice that until such time as we can guarantee this, we are unable to access your property and deliver mail safely.

“Due to the serious nature of the incident deliveries to your address will therefore be suspended with immediate effect.

“I hope you understand that this exceptional step is being taken in order to safeguard the health and safety of Royal Mail employees.

“In the meantime, arrangements have been put in place to hold your mail at the office where it will be available for you to collect between the hours of 7.00-12.00 Monday to Friday and 7.00-11.00 Saturday.

“Please note, I am only able to hold your mail for 18 days, after which it must be returned to sender and you’ll need to provide proof of identity and address such as a passport or driving license.”

What Royal Mail said at the time

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We temporarily suspended deliveries to a number of addresses on St Mark’s Road and Heron Road at the request of the police after one of our postmen was seriously threatened by a customer whilst they investigated this incident.

“The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and we only suspend deliveries as a last resort when the safety of our staff is at risk.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Yes.

In the 15 years, I have been on it

1 Postie Bricked
2 Posties Assaulted
5 shootings
3 stabbings
and not forgetting the usual random verbal abuse.

It's the sort of estate where Zanussi is a regular garden ornament and seems hardly out of place.

We had a delivery like that the best one was a bloke in a dress jumped through an open window wielding a baseball bat and another tried setting the postie on fire all in a days work

There is a town near me where people/children have been known to throw half house bricks at the buses as they go by. But your area sounds worse.
