I would presume we would receive back pay with payment for working the first week of the 2018/2019 tax year. Alternatively in total it will be a lot of money altogether so they may want or need to delay paying it out.

Seems like they (Royal Mail) dictated the ballot timetable, on such a way that even if a Yes vote came in, it would be too late to payout on that week’s payroll. Which just happened to be the last Friday in the 2017/18 financial year.
It is my belief that there is no technical reason preventing the payment of new pay rates and back pay this Friday.
After all, if you set up a spreadsheet on your PC, and apply a formula to add 5% to each value in a set of columns, it needs just one click to update all amounts.
