Another city post office has announced it is due to close.

Lakeside Post Office, in Clearwater Way, Cyncoed , will be closing its doors on April 3, after landlord Blakemore’s announced it would be leaving the premises.



The post office is located within a Spar store and a spokesman for the company said the store will also close on April 11.

He said: “While the decision was a matter of careful consideration, unfortunately the store had been running at a loss for some time and was no longer financially viable for the business.”

The closures come just months after a new Tesco Express opened just a few doors up from the Spar.

The closure of the post office is the second in recent months in the vicinity, after Llanishen Post Office – a mile and a half away, on Station Road – shut its doors for the last time over the Christmas period.


And, across the city, Pontcanna’s post office shut in January when Pontcanna Stores – which housed the post office – shut to make way for a new Co-op store. The loss of the post office sparked objections among the local community.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We can confirm that Blakemore has given us notice they are leaving the premises that houses Lakeside Post Office on April 3.

“Customers should be assured that we are committed to maintaining a Post Office service in the area and will work hard to deliver this.

“We are currently assessing options to maintain the service while we work to identify a permanent solution to sustain vital Post Offices services – from every day banking to a wide range of postal services – for the local community.”


Local resident Peter Sunnam said the latest closure was a blow for people in the area as it provided a public service that would be missed.


He said: “We need a post office in the area because we can’t expect old age pensioners such as myself to walk to the next nearest post office in Waterloo Road.

“I believe it is vital that the post office is returned to the area as soon as possible.”
