Scottish government warns employers over snow days pay docking

Scottish ministers are considering action against employers for docking the wages of staff who could not make it to work because of the bad weather.

So what about the staff who fight through the conditions to get to their place of work, what kind of thanks should they get.

Some guys walked for miles to get to their place of work while staff from the same place, just streets apart, decided that they weren't going to bother.

I agree that when a red warning is in place then the employers should be forced, by law, to abide by the warning but this has to be changed by law and not just soundbites by a politician who will not follow it up by challenging it in parliament.

What should happen is simple, employers not involved in essential services should be forced to close during a severe weather alert. No exception.
Nobody "fights through the conditions" because your place of work should be closed.
The question isn't why staff are docked pay but who made the decision to open delivery offices when there was absolutely no point when the mail was obviously going nowhere?

Our mailcentre closed at 2pm on Wednesday, the back shift were sent home and the night shift told to stay at home yet delivery staff were still expected to turn up for work on Thursday morning....why?

It put staff in unnecessary danger for no particular reason other than intransigence and incompetence.

I expect that no one in this company has got the balls to make an executive decision. They'll all be waiting for their immediate boss to make it.... all the way up the line..... just in case they get help responsible. Like most Delivery Offices we've had no deliveries for two days. We could probably have got some mail delivered on Saturday, it wasn't as bad as the Friday (which was a definate No No), but no mail arrived from the Mail Centre (apparently nobody had decided to grit their carpark so the trucks couldn't get out).

Today there seems to have been no effort made to get a head start on the back log, we've had about the usual amount of mail.... admittedly LOTS of Tracked parcels .... and we'd been expecting to clear a lot more. I returned to the office to fill in the overtime sheet and the PHG said, "The DOM was talking to some people earlier about not claiming overtime because they'd had a couple of days off..... he was talking about using their leave". I thought Here We go!
