GORBALS residents will have to travel further afield to pick up missed parcels after Royal Mail announced they are relocating their operation for the G5 postcode area.

Residents living in the G5 postcode, who miss letters or parcels, currently travel to Victoria Road to pick them up.

Royal Mail announced that they will relocate their delivery operation for this postcode to Baird Street from June.

The move was made after Royal Mail relocated its delivery operations at Dougrie Drive, which is the G45 postcode, to Victoria Road.

Whilst Royal Mail have stated that the changes will not affect deliveries made to customers, those picking up letters and parcels which were unable to be delivered will have to travel around 2.5 miles over the Clyde and across the city centre to retrieve items.

People in the other postcode areas served by Victoria Road delivery office will be unaffected.

Royal Mail also said it is currently looking at extended customer opening hours during the week at Baird Street as part of its detailed planning for the move. The Victoria Road site will also offer extended opening hours for G45 customers.

The move has been slammed by Glasgow Central MP Alison Thewliss who is worried about residents who are infirm or unable to travel.

She said: “I am hugely disappointed at this decision by Royal Mail, which will cause a massive amount of inconvenience for residents in the G5 postcode area of my constituency.

“I first became aware that Royal Mail were considering this move at the tail end of last year, and wrote to every resident in the G5 area to gauge opinion about the proposals. Unsurprisingly, the weight of objection was staggering, with over 96 per cent of respondents stating they were against it.

“More worrying still was the comments made by several residents who are infirm, or unable to travel. Many explained to me in their responses that they would simply be unable to make a trip to Baird Street, be it due to ill-health or for financial reasons. Whilst I welcome the promise of extended opening hours, and I appreciate that Royal Mail say they can arrange for items to be redelivered, this will not always be suitable. These measures cannot adequately replace the convenience of a local, accessible delivery office.

“The fact that Royal Mail, in spite of the evidence presented, have pressed ahead with this plan is frankly appalling, and strikes a further blow against consumers whose essential, local services are slowly being eroded”.

The Evening Times first reported on the plans in October, last year. One postman, who asked not to be named, said the changes would increase traffic on the south side of the city and cause disruption for customers.

Royal Mail said what this means for customers is as follows:

There will be no impact on deliveries to our customers as a result of this move. The postmen and women who currently work in the G45 and G5 postal sectors will continue to serve the local community, delivering a high quality service to our customers.

Customers do not have to travel to the new delivery offices serving them to pick up mail if they do not want to or are unable to do so. Royal Mail can now leave many mail items with a neighbour* if customers are not at home when we attempt delivery. Customers can nominate a dedicated neighbour to take in their parcels by filling in a form at their delivery office.

Customers can also arrange a redelivery free of charge on a day that is convenient for them (including Saturdays), or Royal Mail can deliver the item to a different address within the same postcode area. This service can be arranged by calling the number on the “Something for You” card we leave or by visiting our website at http://www.royalmail.com/redelivery" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

If G45 customers choose to collect mail from us, because they were not at home when we tried to deliver it, they will be able to do this from the customer service point at Victoria Road Delivery Office. This office offers longer opening hours than the current G45 office.

Customers in G5 who also chose to collect mail from us, will be able to do so from the customer service point at Baird Street. Royal Mail is currently looking at extending opening hours at this office on more days during the week.

We have a strong track record of managing change in our business. There will not be any job losses as a result of this relocation.

Posted already on this and my prediction appears to have come true RM have given a two - fingered salute to the public
yet again (and will do so again and again)It would appear the geography of the city was'nt looked at let alone understood.
Either G21/22 or G31/40 going into Baird St. would have been a better option than the one that some minnion in some faraway cupboard has come up with.

The extra costs involved for RM alone must be considerable ie. fuel, vehicle wear and tear and most of all
TIME. Joe Public/customers extra cost in this is of no matter in this as the minnion in the cupboard in Bognor or Reading
or wherever has deemed it so .......

G21/22 is possibly moving into GMc.Bishopbriggs is moving/moved to kirki. Yet another f..k up. They don't give a toss about anybody but the top shareholders.

Have heard about the Briggs and Kirkie merging but dont know where the G21/22 DO would fit into GMC as every
inch of space is a prisoner within the present set-up at GMC .Perhaps they will build onto the existing building and
perhaps i will win the national lottery

G5 is moving from G41/G42 office to allow G45 to move in. G5 officially has always been part of G1-4 office, the only reason it shared with G41/42 was because the location of that office was closer to G5 deliveries. Royal Mail are trying to save money by closing smaller offices

thirty years.Still believe logistics wise either G21/22 or 31/40 is the better option going into Baird St.
Better for customers , staff and the company but we all know the first two dont matter one jot.

Well over 30 years ago.

It's not what's best to fit into Baird St, the decision was made because they are closing G45 office and it was easier to move them into the Big South, (you're obviously an old postie if you call it that

), and move G5 into Baird St.

Spoken like a manager or some "high heid yin" as i have said staff and customers dont matter a jot they only get in the
way of the quest for more and more filthy lucre , no longer can it be said that RM is a "Public Service"
