Royal Mail was forced to pay compensation after a vile racist note was found at a sorting office

ROYAL Mail was forced to pay £70,000 to a group of workers after a racist note was left at a sorting office saying “The KKK just threw a black man down a well”.

The offensive note referencing the hatemongering Klu Klux Klan was pinned to a machine at the firm’s South West distribution centre in Bristol.

Seven men from different ethnic backgrounds claimed the note was aimed at them and complained to bosses after the message appeared in April 2016.

One of the men, who cannot be named, says bosses failed to take action and they were forced to take up their grievance with work place arbitration body ACAS.

And in May last year the seven men won a pay out of around £10,000 each.

The note, written on yellow card, was left on a sorting machine at the Severn Beach plant which employs around 200 people.

It showed a circle with three triangles in it, with two dots in each triangle.

It said “What’s this?” and “P.T.O”.

On the other side the note read “KKK just chucked a black guy down the well”.

The source told The Sun: “It was a racist message and was made to victimise and scare us.

“There was only a few black people there and the rest were white men.

“There was no overt racism but there was obviously someone or some people who were.

“When we complained, Royal Mail did nothing about it.

“The police were also called to investigate a hate crime but nothing came of that.”

The man, from Bristol, who has now left the Royal Mail, said: “We decided to take the case to ACAS and we were pleased to win a payout.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “At the Tribunal early in 2017, it was found there was no discrimination on race or religious grounds against these employees.

“Royal Mail was obviously disappointed that the tribunal felt that our employees were victimised for raising concerns and we have paid out the agreed compensation to them.

“A full investigation was carried out into this matter.

“Royal Mail is committed to a workplace free of discrimination and harassment, where our colleagues feel respected and able to thrive.

“We set clear guidance on how we expect our people to treat one another and we provide a range of channels for colleagues to escalate any concerns they have.”

In August 2012 an Asian postie won a £100,000 payout after being fired when he told bosses about racist abuse from colleagues at a depot in Blackburn, Lancs.

The two penultimate lines are an absolute joke and typical of the dribble Royal Mail put out when their is any question of their integrity.
