The Cardiff East delivery office will close this summer, it has been confirmed
Royal Mail will close a city delivery office amid concerns of the effect it will have on local residents.
The Cardiff East delivery office in Mount Pleasant Lane, Llanrumney, will close this summer.
Royal Mail say none of the 35 staff employed there will lose their jobs and that there will be no impact on residents.
Their delivery operations will move to the Cardiff North East site – which is five miles and a 14-minute drive away, according to Google.
Anyone who misses a delivery will have to travel to Unit 5 Spring Meadow Business Park, Cardiff, to collect it or arrange redelivery to either a neighbour or local post office.
Royal Mail say that postmen and women who work in Cardiff East will continue to serve the local community and discussions have taken place with union CWU and staff.
“The move is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business to increase the efficiency of its operation as well as providing delivery offices which are fit for purpose for our people and for our customers.
“As a commercial business, Royal Mail is responding to the huge growth in electronic communications and decline in letter volumes, while seeing a high volume of parcels and online shopping which need to be delivered to customers,” a spokeswoman said.
But concerns have been raised about the impact it will have on local residents.
Cardiff South and Penarth MP Stephen Doughty has written to Royal Mail on behalf of himself, AM Vaughan Gething and ward councillors, saying there has not been adequate consultation about the closure.
Mr Doughty has held a public meeting about the closure.
He says that there is a lack of adequate bus routes to the new location and that there are concerns people with disabilities will struggle to access it.
Mr Doughty says another concern is that people are worried the site will be sold off and turned into housing.
He writes: “All bar one of the 40 or so residents who attended were completely opposed to the closure/relocation and I would strongly urge you to reconsider this decision”.
Royal Mail was asked if consultation had taken place with local residents.
A spokeswoman said the first proposal for relocation was made in July 2017 but that they were not required to hold public consultations about an operational change to its business.
The date the centre will close will be announced at a later date.

Cantonkid just waiting for Mardy Bridge to open so probably around June time. Its funny because in the office we are still getting told the move is not set in stone, and all that has happened is its moved out of consultation to planning.
But of course us as staff pretty much know its nailed on we are moving.
