Don't understand why you have put "sacked" in quote marks. They were sacked and the EEPTU collaborated with management in recruiting a scab workforce during an industrial dispute! That is not the action of a trade union.

A trade union recruits members and organises them in the workplace then fights for acllective bargaining agreement. The EEPTU got an agreement with the management which then 'recognised' it, denying the workforce the right to chose which union they were represented by. Why do you think that so many managements were keen to have the EEPTU as the 'union' in their workplace?

The EEPTU were kicked out of the TUC for recruiting a scab workforce during a dispute in Southampton. They only sneaked back in by merging with AUEW a TUC affiliate.

As I've already said, it depends on your viewpoint.
Murdoch (scum that he is) was hardly going to use the latest technology to reduce costs,and then over-staff the place as in every other SOGAT represented workplace, was he?
The workforce at Wapping were no longer covered by the catch-all term "printers", but were technical production staff, so the question remains, which union was most able to represent them if it wasn't the ETU?
As to why so many managements were keen to have the ETU, may be because the ETU was graded and self-regulating? Unless you had a recognised apprenticeship and could prove it, you didn't get a union card, and no union card, no start.
In retrospect, the ETU could have handled things better at the time, but then they were in "competition" with the ludicrous SOGAT and the corrupt-as-they-come T&GWU, so should to be judged in context.
