CWU exec urges Yes vote over Royal Mail deal

Members of the CWU’s postal executive have recommended acceptance of the union’s agreement with Royal Mail in a move that could see an end to the long-running dispute over pay, pensions and working conditions.

The agreement has been reached after months of talks and removes the risk of strike action in Royal Mail Group. As well as a three-year pay deal and two-hour cut in the working week worth 12.33% overall (when linked to the shorter working week), the agreement includes the introduction of a potentially ground-breaking new pension scheme for all Royal Mail employees, which will provide the UK’s first collective defined contribution pension and a guaranteed cash lump sum.

CWU deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger said: “This agreement represents the successful outcome of months of talks and is testament to the strength of membership support reflected in the union’s huge vote for strike action in October last year. The success of our campaign has delivered a substantial pay rise, a shorter working week and a pioneering new pension scheme that will secure our members’ future employment, standard of living and retirement security.”

“In the face of the tough challenges Royal Mail faces from gig-economy competitors, unfair regulation and automation, we have reached a settlement that builds a bridge from our current agreements to the future, is progressive and reflects leading-edge solutions in a challenging modern setting. It will also ensure that any future change is managed through a process of evolution not revolution that will protect the interests of all members. The CWU therefore welcomes the company’s commitments to re-establish the principles of security, maintain industrial stability and restore our mutual interest culture while protecting the future of a great public service.”

In theory the negotiators go back to the table.

In practice, they'll have to find out why it was voted down.

In reality, I think they have done enough to get a Yes vote, but not a resounding one.

Yes think it will be a yes vote, but there will be a lot more no votes then they were expecting, I think due to work load issues.

Taking bets on a 40% turn out but 85% yes vote.

The only ballot which has been rejected in the last 20 years has been the first Way Forward Agreement where 5 Divisions of the CWU were leading the opppsition and that agreement had real impacts on Pay for some including removing Saturday premium and NDA for each honour worked past 19:00 until 06:00.

Even than the Way Forward was agreed second time of asking.

So in my expirence opinion this agreement will sail through as most will vote on the basis that Royal Mail’s original proposals have either been defeated or are subject to further talks.

This agreement is not perfect but it is a far better agreement than what was proposed and most importantly allows us to pause Royal Mail’s original proposals .

Dingo you say the deal is not perfect. Below inflation 3 year deal of 7% pay rise, sounding like not a great pension deal and nothing really on workload issues. Think your right not perfect.

yes theres no mention of unmanageable workloads , b&h etc , but theres one thing we have still got A FINISH TIME

, I wonder if Terry etc will be having a live q&a to answer the members questions on this before any ballot .

the cwu keep forcing the shorter working week but it is all linked to other things it's not clear cut,actually when you get passed all the groundbreaking headlines there's alot of trial this and trial that.why is it total secrecy on which offices will be working later? the silence is defaning

sorry but it's a no vote from me.to many issues linked to trial this and that. get past all the sensational headlines and there are a lot of grey areas. the shorter working week Is linked to other trials of delivery methods etc.why the silence on which delivery office's will be working later? how can you vote on something when your not going to be told what time you are going to finish work?

A FINISH TIME of maybe 30 minutes later then you have now.

Too many issues NOT addressed, and I really dont see the numbers adding up on the wages and percentages, mail is not going down as forcast, and yes parcels are getting more and more, its a NO from me

I think our negotiators have done an outstanding job when one considers where we started from and ask "Do any of you on here (who are posting negativity) believe you could have obtained a better outcome ? " ... I think not

If you believe it's a bad deal then go and work for Hermes or Yodel... or another s**t**y outfit ? ? ? There's plenty of mindnumbingly crappy jobs with shitty terms and conditions out there ???

Royal Mail is not one of them.

I believe it bodes well for the future. We must embrace this ground breaking deal. Work hard ... and go home at the end of the day (tired but content) in the knowledge that we have given a fair days graft for a fair days pay ... and with the understanding that a Wage in Retirement awaits us when we get old

I'm a YES.
