ROYAL MAIL: PARCEL VOLUMES UP 6%, LETTERS DOWN 5%

Royal Mail has reported that its parcel volumes were up 6% and letter volumes down 5% for the nine months up to 24 December.
In a trading update issued today (18 January), Moya Greene, the Chief Executive Officer of Royal Mail, said: “We have had a good performance over the important Christmas period thanks to the hard work and dedication of our people. They pulled out all the stops to deliver a great Christmas for the UK.
“We remain the number one facilitator of e-commerce in the UK due to our significant investments to improve our customer offering. Parcel volumes in the nine months were up 6%, with 149m parcels handled over the December trading period. Letters performance was better than expected with addressed letter volumes down 5%. GLS delivered another strong performance with volumes and revenue up 10%. Overall, Group revenue was up 2%.
“Given our performance to date, we expect to see broadly similar volume and revenue trends in UK parcels and letters for the full year as in the nine months. In GLS, we expect underlying revenue growth for the full year to be broadly in line with the first half.
“We have continued to make progress in talks with our unions on pay, pensions and the other issues under discussion. We have agreed the fundamental principles on some of the key issues and talks are ongoing to finalise these and other areas. We believe we can reach agreement on an affordable and sustainable pension solution and a pay deal that will enable us to continue to innovate and grow.”
While parcel volumes up were 6%, revenue was up by 4% – which Royal Mail said reflected “trends in the international traffic mix with a decline in higher AUR consumer export traffic due to the competitive market”.
Royal Mail added: “In UK parcels, the overall trends in the first nine months were broadly unchanged from the first half.
“Parcel volumes were up 6%, with growth largely driven by a good performance in Royal Mail account parcels. Royal Mail Tracked 24®/48® and Tracked Returns® services saw continued strong volume growth of 31%.
“Our international parcels business continued to benefit from our new cross-border traffic initiative2 which accounted for around 2 percentage points of total parcel volume growth and around 1 percentage point of parcel revenue growth in the period. Outside of this initiative, we saw an increase in lower AUR import volumes, largely from Asia.
“Parcelforce Worldwide volumes were up 2% benefitting from new customer wins.
“Total parcel volumes in the December trading period were 149m, up 6% over the same period last year.”
While letter volumes were down by 5%, the revenue decrease was 3%.
GLS saw a 10% increase in both volume and revenue. Royal Mail commented: “Revenue growth was achieved in all its main markets, with continued strong growth in Italy. Good growth was also seen in Denmark and Eastern Europe.”

i think its the clever way they juggle the figures. when they say letters, its 'royal mails' own letter volumes that are down. but we are now taking these same letters via downstream access or whatever. anyhow, its their clever bullshit machine that tries to brainwash us into thinking they are down but we all know different. I used to deliver 3 bags of mail ten years ago. I deliver 8 bags now. explain that one you lying pack of galoots!!

If letter volumes are falling as much as they say they are we would be going out with hardly any letters just parcels but as we who actually deliver the stuff know its all a con aimed at driving down our terms and conditions.

When they declare ‘mails down’ they always seem to communicate it in such an accusing way to us postmen as if we are in some way to blame. That must then surely be the case all the way up the food chain to the top. It is impossible for us to have less to do and not anybody else in the company and yet does anyone else keep getting more and more chucked at them under the guise of ‘mails down so to keep full time jobs you need to be more efficient and do more’. w*****s have kept peddling the same boring myth for so long that from the top of the tree right down to DOM level they have brain washed themselves into believing it and yet we are supposed to be the thick ones.

The thing is that they have been shooting out the same figures for over twenty years. Now if that was the case on a simple basis there would no longer be any letters being delivered. But percentages do not work on a simple basis. The actual reduction in the number of items being delivered is diminishing every year. If you look at that reduction in terms of a percentage of what was being delivered twenty years ago, the percentage would probably be less than 1%. So add on the packets, parcels, D2Ds the average postie is having to work a lot harder than we were 20 years ago. I can remember going out on a Saturday Morning with half a bag of mail for the whole Cycle route with no specials and at most 3 or 4 packets. Start at 6am , out by 7am and back before 9am.

some clarification,
when they say mail volume down, does that mean 1st/2nd class mail paid via stamps and business payments and there losing this amount of volume from 3rd party middle men who leave royal mail to do the final leg work?
we've been fed the same bull year in year out, how about we do some revisions based on how many parcels we doing now , we need to lessen the amount of calls per duty, create new walks, jobs for new people .........
but we all know how this plays out, same way 2d barcodes and other new ideas have, you do it and get on as normal.
no adjustments to walks

There is no doubting that letterbox mail has decreased. Less people receive bank statements through the post, there are so many things done on line now that it is inevitable that mail has dropped. Less Christmas Cards, Less Birthday Cards. However there has been increases in mailshot advertising so some of the effects of online communications has been offset.
