One of the problems I am witnessing with management is that they are ultra competitive and like to crap on each other to make themselves look a bit more superior in the office. The prime example is when they know it's their day off and some other rookie is doing their shift next day....Van keys/pillar pouches go missing or inferior workplans being drawn up. That said, managers do have to deal with their DOMs - and if they are being put on shifts that they don't like or being asked to do things they don't want to do,then that tends to get reflected down to their staff and that's probably why staff A gets put on duty B
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Maybe a survey of the survey is needed to find out if management engagement is 100%.
Over a number of years the results of the national survey did not seem to be acted upon or more likely was completely ignored. One of the Postie's we used to have was a bully and a pain in the a*** to everyone. He would be rude and even swear at customers and whatever he did was protected by the union rep. Eventually he left of his own accord for a different job. One of the main problems with the union is that it stops us getting rid of bad people. In recent times we had an excellent DOM and the results of the survey were seen to be acted upon. Currently we are without a manager though as our DOM just left.....
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

fishtank wrote:Structure improves productivity, people knowing what they are supposed to do every day. It's very simple. Line managers don't like structure because a well run structured office makes it very obvious how little they're actually needed.

If you watch your average line manager they'll spend the first hour of the day pulling any structure apart moving postie A to duty B and postie B to duty C then postie C to duty B for no particular reason other than to create "work" for themselves. They will then expect a pat on the back for resolving these "issues". This is where a great deal of Royal Mail's efficiency problems arise from. If you tried that at the likes of Amazon or DPD they would be told to clear out their desk. Nobody hides incompetent managers like Royal Mail.

If our DOM came round and said thank you to the staff i think I'd fall down flat on my face with astonishment. It's such an easy thing to say.

We had a great DOM a few years ago in a town in Hertfordshire, always came round and said good morning. If you needed time off he would always sort it out without resorting to going round the office asking to swap days/leave. The area rep removed him and put a Dom in who couldnt manage a p@@s up in a brewery. The powers above love yes men, he wasnt and worked with the workers and union closely and got moved on because of it.
