A heavily pregnant mum bought a rail ticket and lay down on the tracks before a high-speed train killed her and her unborn baby, an inquest has heard.

Zdenka Yabani, who had two other kids, climbed down from the platform on to the tracks and lay across them before the vehicle hit her, a coroner was told.

The tragedy took place at Slough railway station in Berkshire, just half a mile away from the church where she lived with her husband and other kids.

The hearing heard that Mrs Yabani, 39, walked from her home to the train station, where she bought herself a ticket and strolled onto Platform 2

She then suddenly climbed down and lay across the tracks, it was said.

Moments later, a non-stop intercity train sped through the station, devastating the mum-to-be's body and killing both her and her unborn child.

Mrs Yabani's Ghanian husband, Jude, later positively identified the remain - which had been taken to a mortuary - as his wife.

She had been eight months pregnant when she died.

Senior Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford opened the inquest into the mum's death and adjourned it for further investigations to be carried out by British Transport Police ( BTP ) officers.

Mr Yabani is listed on his website as a Minister at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Merton Road, Slough. He is believed to play a leading role at the church, as well as acting as caretaker, living on the premises.

When asked if he wanted to comment on the death of his wife, he said: "I've told the police everything. Please go away or the police will come."

Opening the inquest in Reading, Berkshire, coroner Mr Bedford heard that emergency services were called to the station on January 8 this year after the train screeched to a halt following the tragedy.

BTP were leading the investigation into the devastating incident, which halted trains in and out of London for most of the day.

Mr Bedford said he accepted jurisdiction over the death after being presented with evidence by Police Sergeant David Keir.

He said: "This is the opening of the inquest into the death of Mrs Zdenka Yabani, aged 39 years, of Merton Road, Slough.

"I have been given preliminary evidence, which still needs to be formalised, provided by BTP's Sgt. Keir that Zdenka Yabani attended Slough railway station on January 8 this year, earlier than 9.30am when the police attended.

"She purchased a ticket from a machine in the booking hall and then made her way to platform 2.

"From her position after walking along the platform, she then climbs down from the platform onto the tracks and lays herself across the tracks and was struck by a high-speed train.

"It is confirmed as part of the investigation that she was eight months pregnant at the time of her death.

"Confirmation of her identity was given by her husband Jude Yabani of the same address.

"So as I have assessed jurisdiction and that it is an unnatural death with the cause of being preliminarily assessed as being multiple injuries, it is appropriate for me to open and adjourn the inquest into the death of Zdenka Yabani until 10am on June 21 this year."

No family members were at Reading Town Hall, Berkshire, for the opening of the inquest.

The inquest will take place this summer.
