As the union should be aware resourcing and staffing in deliveries is a shambles. The resourcing model doesn't work other than on paper and full-time staff in a lot of offices are struggling to cover management deficiency. This impacts on the time both full-time and part-time staff are leaving the office which obviously impacts on finish times.

What comes next is a ridiculous confrontation with management armed only with the overrunning delivery procedure which is embarrassingly outdated and not fit for purpose in the 21st century. It places all the burden of decision making on the member, doesn't even recognise that there are two people in a van and leaves all the risk for getting things wrong with the delivery officer.

Answer this question, in what other industry do staff have to ask management if they can stop working when they're supposed to stop working? The onus needs to be switched to management to ask members if they want to work overtime and if they say no it needs to be management's duty to ensure that workload does not exceed work hours and no pressure is applied to that member of staff to work overtime against their will.

This would require a complete change in management philosophy and it would need to come from the people sitting around that negotiating table, not only that it would have to be effectively policed by both sides at a level above the delivery office.
I 100% agree with this. Its so true, you go to the management and have to argue why you should be allowed to finish on time and regularly get made to feel inadequate when they compare you to someone else, yeah someone who doesn't take breaks, comes in early and runs round the duty like their being chased down the road by a bull.
Well said . We are all sick to the back teeth of it . The management need a radical wake up call .it all boils down to not enough staff and too little time ... that's it. Get more staff and reduce the size of the duties .... simple

There is an agreed delivery span of between 14:00 and 15:00 for towns and cities and apart from voluntary overtime no one should be going past that on delivery.

The hour off the working week works out at 12 mins a day off a 5 day duty and progrsss has been made to ensure the vast majority will not have to finish later.

If you are going past your time or you have different span unless your a rural Delivery than you are allowing Royal Mail to break the Agreement. Why don’t you stop them doing that ?

I wouldn't say anyone on here was militant at all, or even radical which in my opinion is a good thing and should not be associated with the word 'terrorism'. I would say that the majority of posties are extremely angry and very pissed off. We have been working over our finish times for as long as can remember. Occasionally we get a Tuesday where we save some time but it doesn't happen very often. When we occasionally finish a little early we get beaten over the head with it. The CWU just continue to stand there and do nothing or side with management. Is it any wonder everyone on here is so negative about there being a good or even fair outcome from the talks.

A while ago there was a documentary on TV, I think it was on BBC1, about one of the other delivery companies that started delivering letters in cities. I can't recall which company it was but I think it was in London. Anyway they delivered to delivery points every other day which isn't that good a service. The better aspect was that they would not pay any overtime so they would phone up their delivery staff near the end of their duty times if they were still out and order them to return with any mail that was undelivered. This is a more honest way of running a business.

Workers in the UK have a reputation for going beyond the call of duty, being too willing, and doing work within their own time. But I think you would be hard pressed to find another major employer in the UK that runs their business so the employees have to work unpaid to get the job done.

Nobody should work over without getting paid. I go over most days and always get paid for it.Surely nobody works for free? Oh sorry this is planet RM and in most D.Os you have half the office in early sorting at their frames and prepping D2Ds, consequently saving RM a fortune and making duties look easier than they really are  Im pretty sure this is a mentality unique to Royal Mail, a legacy of job and finish

Is it any wonder that posties become 'militant' when the Union leaves its up to its members to try and get some work off just so they can work to their time and then having to face daily battles with management over it?? Like fish said, the overrunning procedure was set in the dark ages and its obvious to me just by what dingo mentioned above that the bullying and harassment in offices towards staff simply wanting to work to their time is last on the CWU's agenda. As for allowing Royal Mail to 'break the agreement', well, why isn't the Union ensuring that the company is adhering to its agreements?? If staff really don't want to be working an hour or so past their finish time, why is it so much like hard work just to get that work taken off??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

He should be suspended until all 7 cases have been investigated fully. A truly disgraceful number of cases against one man.
