Personally I would say the main thing Postie's didn't want was later start & finish times. Everything else is pretty much negotiable. In our office we are not that far off the 1530 finish time that is being quoted as a worst case scenario now. If you add say 12 minutes for giving an hour away and say another hour later for their cost cutting we will be working in dark potentially for the whole of the run up to Christmas time. Plus it affects Postie's who have family commitments in the later part of the afternoon, collecting children etc. I don't see the UK economy ever getting back to the former interest rates of say 2008 when you could routinely get 5% on a savings account in a building society. The decreased interest rates are the major factor in pension schemes being a viable way for people to survive on pensions in their old age. We have to take a stand on start/finish times otherwise we will capitulated on everything to my mind.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

Maybe this has been said before in multiple ways but, I have an idea.

Instead of sitting around a table one day, why doesn't each and every person involved in these discussions go to different delivery offices and work as a postie for a full shift - both CWU and RM negotiators.

Then, come back to the table with a more realistic idea of what we are being asked to do up and down the country on a daily basis. If that happened, both sides would have more of understanding of what is and what is not achievable.

All this talk of maximising efficiency in the first wave is great blue sky thinking - I total understand it is about maximising efficiency to reduce costs and increase profit, that's how business works. What I don't understand is why those at the top haven't taken a walk in our shoes for some time (and *those on the other side unlikely never attempted the physical side of our role), to allow them to get a feel for how the job actually is now, rather than them good ol' days of the fabled two deliveries a day and home with your feet up by noon.

Times have changed. Deliveries are longer. The demographic of the items we handle and customers we serve have changed vastly in the past two years, let alone the 501 the company has existed. Yes, our customers, both sender and recipient have differing demands, but until they are able to produce a robot capable of doing our job in it's entirety, it would be great if those in the talks remember that it is real actual people being asked to work harder, faster and for longer, and those people are starting to wear out quicker than a pair of RM issue shoes.

with a 3.30 finish will offices doing longs and shorts be scrapped ? and just have a set time everyday ie 7.42am - 15.30pm , as on the longer days they would be expecting posties to work up to or beyond 4.30pm , and some of us cant get the job done now within our time , 4pm + finish now , even on a Tuesday we finish at 3 ish now when the finish time is 2pm. and we all know why royal mail will take the time off the start time because they will know that the idiots who work for nowt now will just continue to start early for nowt , :arrrghhh

this is the bit dingo and his cohorts cant get their head round
many offices and people are working to later finishes already their proposals make it even worse
1. people are bullied threatened on daily basis to complete deliveries re of finish times
2.whole operation relies on forced o-time
3.workload figures manipulated and used to intimidate staff to perform over and above
4 meal relief being abused by both employer and staff as their is "no time"
the guys on shop floor know all this

95% of the office start min. 15mins early every day, some upto 45mins early . all year round.
Anyone who wants to Start & finish on time faces harassment from Mangers & other Posties. And threatened with removal from their duty
AG's used to fill vacant F/T duties on a permanant basis ( come in late, Lapse Ips, stream the mail to fit the hours paid )
Most don't book extended delivery o/t as you get hassled - ranging from snide remarks to full interigation, even arguing about O/T at Xmas !
Whats a Meal relief ?
Lapsing, no ifs,no buts, your taking it
Maybe its different in London

Everyone is against later start times. What about those who have to pick up children from school? Later starts seems like a way of forcing those with responsibilities with childcare out and the union doesn’t seem interested at all.

that's an interesting one though if people have to leave the job as this makes it difficult to continue to work due to these changes , constructive dissimal maybe ? hmm

On the question of VR's, the union simply won't agree to them. They just cost me £40,000 by refusing to agree to them at my office. Strange but I thought the union were supposed to represent me.

I personally think now's the time to give people the chance to take a decent v.r package and take on people that want to work later if that's what the union and royal mail want and need to drive the business forward. It's just not right making you work later and later. I took this job to fit in with my lifestyle , picking up kids from school etc. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to get to the school in time at 315 pm. And like many have said on this forum you are singled out and made to feel like your doing something wrong for wanting to leave work in the office :nervous .

I read things like this on here and shudder. Makes me realize my DO doesn't sound so bad in comparison. Management can make some odd decisions that make you feel like headbutting the frame at times, but if they were like the above I honestly think I'd have to jack it in.

The job can be hard enough without all that grief as well.

Don't get me wrong, buddy, I totally believe it and I've seen signs of it, just my DO doesn't sound as bad as a lot of others. Maybe it's just that I haven't been there long enough or I've just been lucky the couple of times I've stood up for myself and then been left alone.Like you say, I'll watch that space and hope it doesn't change for the worst.

I realize there's a lot of crap going on throughout the company and I feel for anyone who is suffering it. I honestly wasn't trying to sound smug or doubting that its happening, sorry if it came over like that.
