I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Well that was a long read. Still seems that there's a lot "Up in the air" and needing to be discussed further.
I'm glad there "seems" to be some movement on the Pensions Issue, which was my main concern, although we'll have to wait and see. TBH there still appears to be far to much room for maneuver (on RMs behalf). I'll be glad if,and when, they're nailed down to specifics.

Why agree a pay deal at 2% for next year 1/4/2018 when inflation is currently in excess of 3%.?

Because the expectation is that the inflation rate will fall and average out at c2% over the 2018/19 fiscal year..helped by interest rate rises.

Well that is open to abuse then. What if inflation rises? Inflation Pay rises are normally based on real inflation as it is or has been during the previous year as that is the cost of living that you have had to deal with. Hikes in interest rates will help the savers but it will increase the cost for homeowners and those that take out loans.

Is that a bad thing?

Well that's fairly obvious Lincox. I agree with your initial post that 2% is not good enough when inflation is 3% plus. The point I was trying to make is really not connected as such. I was merely asking your opinion of what you consider is better. To have people who own houses, and taking out loans, paying more, or people who are saving being paid more?Lincox wrote:Depends what side of the coin you are on.

Well Dorset, being retired you would expect me to go for a higher rate of savings but I was one of those who had a mortgage when the mortgage rates were in excess of 15%.
To enable the younger generations to be able to afford to buy houses and pay for them, and particularly with the poorer rates of pay, any hike in interest rates is a negative for them. I was earning in excess of £20k per year in the mid to late eighties. The rates of pay today are an indictment of a system that has seen companies stripped of investment in the employees and terms and conditions edging back towards those of bygone years in order to supplement the greed and prosperity of those at the top.

A balanced point of view I think Lincox. You have hit the nail on the head, reference savings. In all past generations saving was always seen as a good thing. Our parents and grandparents would always choose saving for something over getting into debt that they couldn't handle. It comes as a shock to be told that it's a waste of time saving!
I can sympathise with OAPs that have saved all their lives thinking they'd be able to use interest on savings to help them in their old age. It must come as a slap in the face to realise all your savings are only paying you peanuts! As you say we can blame the greed of corporations for screwing down the wages and running down industry, add to that to the incompetence of politicians for not dealing with the housing problem. It's a tough time for youngsters.

Best not hold me breath regarding this issue then !!53. The calculation of holiday for part time employees who work hours above their
contractual hours was raised by the Union. The issue of holiday pay and part
time employees was not identified in my terms of reference for the mediation
and, regrettably, it was not possible to do so in the time available. It is,
however, noted, that although this matter is currently the subject of wider
litigation, the employer has put a proposal to the Union to address this issue in respect of part time employees who routinely work additional hours over an
extended period.

This is globalisation big corporations ruling over anyone who does not own anything but a tiny piece of real estate and even then they change the rules by government is it not time people of the world realised that for our futures and by that I mean our children and the future of mankind we need too redress this situation and not sit on our hand's anymore! Whatever come's of this deal or no deal I can only hope that we the workers deserve better than those that rule us as a company as a nation and as a global mafia run by the rich for the rich send your daughters to the presidents club run by the rich!Dorset Plodder wrote:A balanced point of view I think Lincox.
