A POSTMAN was taken to hospital after suffering a serious bite from a dog.
The postal worker, from Dalton, was delivering mail to a Dalton address when his middle finger was mauled by a dog on the other side of the letterbox.
He was taken to Furness General Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital.
The victim said: "My finger was hanging off by a 10mm bit of skin but they managed to reattach it.
"The bone was crushed as well.
"It's the middle finger of my left hand and I'm left-handed as well so it has affected what I've been able to do quite considerably."
Surgeons managed to save the finger and the postman is currently recuperating from his injury.
A spokesman for Royal Mail, Graham Moore, said: “A postman delivering mail to the address in Dalton did receive quite a nasty dog bite last Thursday.
“But the good news is he is recovering and will be heading back to work in the next week or so."
Barrow police were initially involved but the dog attack is deemed a civil issue and will be dealt with privately.
Royal Mail confirmed that they are still delivering mail to the Dalton address.

Re: DOG ATTACK LEAVES DALTON POSTIE IN HOSPITAL
If I had an operation because a dog had bitten my finger off while I was delivering mail, there's no chance in hell I'd be back at work a week after the op. I hope it's his own decision, and not a decision Royal Mail are trying to force onto him...TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

do what I do, post it halfway, keep a tight hold of it and let the dog rip it to pieces, job done, "it got caught in the flaps and I couldn't save it" with a fake innocent look on my face and do it again next weekNickiKitten wrote:Typical! let your dog maul a postie, you will still get your giro!TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/viewartic ... ?id=558430

What annoys me is the wording, as if this is just a trivial matter.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/viewartic ... ?id=558430

A nasty bite! I wonder what response this Royal Mail spokesman would have given if his 'tackle' were hanging by about 10mm and his nuts got crushed!
We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!
