The issue with PDA monitoring is that it'll pit OPG's against each other. X can do a duty in Y time, so why are you taking longer? etc. Plenty of great ideas in this thread, but the spirit in how they get implemented would be key. A change in the culture of how RM management operate would be amazing.redneck wrote:I'd accept use of PDA's to monitor progress on rounds, clocking in and out, 8 - 4 (or less) for me would be OK, one pension for all, robust policy on making p/t up to a 35 hour week if they are working those hours regularly, acceptance from management of round ownership within the current framework (i.e. less flexibilty for them to play around with our lives).
It would be nice to get a commitment to a strategy that focuses on more business, not one which requires managers to reduce their budgets by 3% year on year and gain kudos for burying the company in the ground ultimately.

An employer who values it's productive workforce and actually listens and takes notice of what it says, how it feels...

The same as if he didn't. Nothing x nothing= nothing.cloherty1976 wrote:What would happen if he did complete it on time?seaside wrote:The question is what we want and union at the top thinks is a good deal. Would be an idea for the ones at top management and union to do just 1 week as a postman and see if they can complete everything in the time given.

No 9 till 5pm for letter deliveries - We know why Royal Mail want it. If they can invest in automation and change the pipeline it means they can save in both processing and delivery staff who are sorting mail in delivery offices. But machines often break down, and even now there are problems in maintaining service levels when the 2nd wave of mech comes in either late or un-sequenced. Secondly, it will give the company the green light to further extend deliveries on foot - which creates more exhaustion and fatigue to an ageing workforce. Thirdly, it further damages our reputation as Morning posties. And lastly, it leads to more accidents and issues while on delivery during both rush hour traffic and delivering in the dark - its pitch black outside now at 4pm
2. An end to the van share - Its not one of Royal Mail's brighter ideas. The cost of buying all those vans to pair posties up, then there's petrol costs, more van accidents on deliveries and repair and maintenance. Then of course you are working in pairs - so one finishes a loop and you are waiting for the other to finish, or if you are a van driver, you are driving back round again to pick your partner up after doing a parcel. Its just massively inefficient, especially if your partner won't use a trolley so the driver can't get cracking with large packets. The driver loops are supposed to smaller to accommodate all this, but its not often the case when your partner can't manage their own loops. There must be a better way.
3. Dedicated large parcel drivers all year round - not just at Xmas. Its something that we always had and how many times have we had large parcels which just get in the way of all the delivery bags and trays that are just crammed in the van. Some of these large parcels that we get seem to fill half of a small van - it just doesn't make sense. There should be a dedicated large van doing all these large packets.
4. A strong emphasis on "customer service" and doing things our way instead of copying the 'competition'. Just because the competition are leaving parcels 10 doors away down the street, why should we copy them? Some customers just don't want their parcels left with neighbours - and we are unique in that we can bring their items in for their collection at a callers office. What could make us really unique would be to offer customers time slots as something close to a 24/7 dedicated large parcel service, including Saturday's and Sunday. We could customers choose their own delivery slots - either early morning (6-9am), during day (9-5pm) or evening (5-11pm) and these drivers won't focus on anything else other than parcels in their own postcode area.
What was the point you were making about NO walking postmen as such? For all Royal Mail mention about dwindling mail, I do question why Im getting 5 trays of mech, several buddy trays and 6 loads of flyers this week!!
Anyway, I get the point about the shorter working week but do you really think that Royal Mail will suddenly put everyone on 35 hour contracts (with no loss in pay for those who are already on 39 hours)??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

We will be all in bigger vans soon with no bugger else but yourself soon so less staff per van but the same workload or more it's like a rural but just bigger think of it that way!postslippete wrote:k979aaa wrote:Cannot see any of this happening as they want drivers in bigger vans to cover all area so NO walking postmen as such and collections will be done at the end of duty's the only hope we can have is a shorter working week and a pension for all and bigger OT rate for those who wish to cover the packets not done in time!postslippete wrote:1. The bottom line for me is sorting this Pension Cock Up out. Most other things can be worked on and sorted out over a period of time. However if you shaft a working man after a lifetime of toil, and STEAL his Pension, then you are a particularly low form of scumbag!
As you can see I get pretty emotive about Pensions. Pay Rises, Start Times, Allowances etc are important, but you're still working and you can fight the changes and find ways to deal with them. Once you've hung your boots up the last thing you need is some Greedy Corporate Scumbag taking money out of your wallet week on week!

shorter working week dosent really interest me because there is no way they are going to shorten any walks and a lot of the walks in my office go over regular now with a longer week
