Interview with Dave Warren

Post by sol »

"There needs to be a broad based campaign to reject the deal"

Interview with Dave Warren

The CWU Executive voted by 9-5 to recommend acceptance of the deal with Royal Mail. As well as the five votes against, including the union President Jane Loftus, three National Officers (those responsible for mail centres, delivery and logistics) also refused to endorse it. SOLIDARITY interviewed Dave Warren, one of the five, who is calling for a broad based No campaign and for the members to reject the deal.

A capitulation to management’s agenda

Why did you vote against the deal?

I voted against the deal because it is a capitulation to management’s agenda. They have got the majority of what they wanted in exchange for a meagre increase in pay.
The union has conceded the employers’ position almost completely on flexibility. Local reps are going to be forced into agreeing “efficiency dealsâ€

Of course we are mate! The thing is, some of us have a different view to Hayes and Co about what a union is for. For Billy Boy and his mates, it's something to win concessions from an unelected mob of parasites, just like unions were in the mid-1800s. For others of us, a union should be a weapon to get rid of the unelected mob of parasites and take what is rightfully ours. I'm one of the latter.

Members have been magnificent and have been absolutely solid throughout the strikes.

Well in my personal experience support increased with time and information.
Since the only possible justification for this scandalous deal is a collapse of membership resolve, and since one of the leaders privvy to such informatin says this was not so, the only logical conclusion to be drawn is that there has been a dirty deal or D warren is lying and we all drifted back. I know what happened in my office and others, no collapse.

I am voting NO ! against this deal, this is a sell out, the deal is not much different to what the Management is trying to force on us before we started striking, I cannot believe we lost 2 weeks wages only to get the same shite, we should have continued the rolling strikes , it was working, wait til after Christmas then the management will hammer us, they already double crossed us twice during the "period of calm" :evil/mad

Management want a tame house union, like the old EEPTU (Electrical Union), whose job is to discipline the workforce in line with the management’s aims.
Really?
Utter BS. The EEPTU was my original union, was stronger and better organised than certain others, had a good benevolent scheme, strike pay AND we had a closed shop..
Someone should check facts before posting.

Hay tommo it's amazing warrens version of the deal is nothing like the one lovejoy has been telling us about. Perhaps lovejoy should get in touch with warren and tell him how wrong he is

Tman. The EEPTU was the union that organised a scab workforce at Wapping, collaborating with the sacking of 5,000 print workers. It had a strange method of organising workers. It was called in by employers as the 'union' of choice to stop more genuine independent and militant unions from getting their feet under the table.

When the EEPTU joined with the AEU to become the AEEU, in 2000, weeks before the government's Fairness at Work legislation (which gives workers the right to ballot for recognition of a union of their choice), the AEEU signed and agreement with the North Sea oil companies, which denied the workers the right to chose which union represented them.

Dosn't seem like a very good record to me.

As and exprinter a could not agree more yes they had some good activists but at the end of day they orginised strike breakers to do other trade union members work when on strike just like the CMA. and where expelled from the TUC as should UNITE unless the get rid of the CMA

.

That depends on your memory/point of view.
All those print workers were "sacked" due to new technology, and who better to look after it than the skilled workers of the ETU?
The only wonder is that SOGAT managed to retain thier archaic working practices for so long.
The ETU always had a good name for protecting/vetting it's members and working with the employers, which is necessary when you're working with electricity.
(The last thing you need (as many found out the hard way in the 1930s) is some half-trained T&G worker alongside you.)
Murdoch is a nasty piece of work, but he only used the new technology to reduce costs, and there's a parallel there to the current RM dispute.
