A physio will be able to give you some exercises to strengthen the muscles above the knee to give it support, but without knowing exactly what is wrong they will be groping in the dark.
Ultimately you will need an MRI scan to determine what the problem is.
Though there is the new NHS routine called "grin and bear it". It saves the taxpayer millions.

On a completely separate note I explored a holistic solution for a niggling injury I had but it began with - "embrace your inner unhappiness."
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Bit of an update, finally got an MRI done with the results showing slight damage to the bone and cartilage.
Advice from the physio was basically do less of what hurts or look at surgery with no guarantees that would help.

Would appreciate any advice from folk in the know or who have been through similar as to next steps.

I've been there, done that and had the keyhole knee arthroscopy! The 12 weeks non weight bearing on crutches was tedious to say the least... (I had microfracture of the back of the kneecap procedure carried out, hence the long time on crutches). Go with what your surgical consultant recommends, and keep on doing the physio.

Ironically the knee which had them surgery is right as rain now, it's my other knee which is giving me bother.
