Unite, the UK’s largest trade union, declared victory in their campaign to let people who use business premises – but aren’t directly employed by the business – gain access to toilets and washing facilities.

Drivers might otherwise be forced to “hold on” for excessive periods of time – or to use bushes and alleyways, with a negative effect on society in general.

Unite national officer Adrian Jones, said: “Finally drivers have won the right to access toilet facilities when making deliveries.

This reform would not have occurred without Unite’s continued campaigning on this matter.

Restoring dignity

“This change in the application of the regulations is highly significant as it restores the dignity of drivers by giving them the right to use an employer’s toilet and hand washing facilities.”

The union highlighted the fact that being asked to “hold on” all the time can lead to serious health problems including urinary tract infections and bladder damage, as well as a possible “build up of toxins in the body”.

It’s also a gendered issue: female drivers face further problems if they’re denied access to toilets while at work.

Hygiene was also highlighted, with access to washing facilities ensuring that drivers have no reason not to have clean hands – important for those making food deliveries.

Name and shame

But if companies push back against the new right, the union has threatened to expose the publicly.

“If employers continue to refuse our members access to toilets we will pursue them through all avenues open to us and that will include naming and shaming companies that deny drivers the right to spend a penny,” said Mr Jones.

When I worked in franchised BOs in the City of London, there was one run by a foreign currency exchange company that wouldn't allow RM drivers collecting mail to use their toilets on grounds of 'security'. One female driver who asked to use the toilets was told by the woman manager to use the bushes in the square across the road.

I used to collect from a hotel & it always at this point of the collection that I needed to have a wee, so I asked at the reception for permission and they said yes, from then on I didn't need to hold on & and give myself abdominal pain.

There has to be some leeway on this. The amount of rounds I’ve done where there’s absolutely no toilets anywhere is unreal.
Not saying you should be allowed to pee in someone’s doorstep, but a wooded area or some such.
