PEOPLE JUST DONT LIKE CHANGE...should swap walks every 3 months
You can't equalise walks because you can't equalise people and at the end of the day that's what the bitching is about.
The longest walks in our office are the rurals. They're all held by senior guys who took them because if you take your time and do it by the book physically they're not the toughest. The reserves tend to go on them and smash an hour off them then tell everyone they're a piece of piss completely missing the point. If you go by the book they're long but easy, If you drive like Lewis Hamilton and run about the village like the flash they're short but knackering, How do you equalise s**t like that?

Nobody is allowed to go home until the end of their duty.fishtank wrote: How do you equalise s**t like that?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Cant equalise walks? So at my office its ok for the most senior workers to go home an hour early everyday using the vans? Not giving a crap about other peoples walks being an hour more and over? Same people who take the piss out of people moaning about their walks being too big but can't do the same amount of work other people do day in day out?
You can't say its fair for people like that to get a full time wage and not actually do the full time ever!.
And fishtank actually the rurals are not the easiest in my office. The easiest ones funnily enough our union rep knows because they cover them and couldn't give a crap about anyone elses walk being too long as they are never on them. So yeah a typical senior staff looking out for themselves in my office and worse yet a union rep who looks out for himself and a select few mates who don't say anything because they know they have it easy.
But obviously I don't know what I'm talking about. Not that I would notice as I cover most of the 50+ walks in my office.
Sure all walks are equal, keep it up and give other colleagues more work because they have been in the service less. Don't worry RM will keep looking after the senior staff more as a few on here seem to think RM give a crap about them.
Really does baffle me how you can justify being in the job a long time you should be rewarded for with less work. That makes no business sense at all.

There are two separate arguments going on here and some posters are attempting to join the two and direct their anger at me for defending a position I never defended.
1. Can you practically equalise duties given differences in types of houses/flats and rural/urban/business deliveries and the difference in performance levels especially with regards to age?
Honestly after umpteen revisions using both table top and planning tools the answer is no.
And the argument I never defended or even took part in that staff should be allowed to go home early. If you are genuinely interested in my opinion it's no. They are however two separate arguments.

Duties will never be all the same but I’m pretty sure they are much more equal than when I started but the big difference then is nobody complained about seniority everyone excepted you started at the bottom and the senior staff had done their time seniority treats everyone exactly the same take that away and your left with favouritism if you stay long enough you will get a better pick of the duties

The biggest point that nobody mentions is that we all work at a different pace, nothing to do with age or seniority, I certainly haven't got the easiest walk in the office but its not the biggest, there are people at our office that spit their dummy out if they have to do a walk that they don't like or work with someone who is slower than them and when it comes to holidays they want, sometimes its like working at a bloody nursery, if its any consolation 20% of staff are over 55 so you wont have to wait too long to live the dream, as they say

seniority was ok in the past , your in a job thats in competition with people who get nowhere near what you get in benefits/wage.
with all the new starters they are picking up all the scraps while some are milking all the overtime doing 2 easy walks and still getting back before people doing unsigned walks.
the reason the old boys don't like any change is had too good for so long the hate being told different(spanner in the works), like robots in been drummed into them over the years, thats why if had rotation every 3 months its keeping people fresh/open to change.
even with the union its feels like you have to join it to survive, this needs to change as well

Quite right too, my duty is not as equal as you may think

This topic of choice was equalising duties.k979aaa wrote:Cut Off and go home it is the managers job after that!fishtank wrote:What happens to the duties that are regularly over their contracted time?clashcityrocker wrote:Nobody is allowed to go home until the end of their duty.fishtank wrote: How do you equalise s**t like that?

How does cutting off or working overtime equalise duties?
With the wide range of outdoor performance it's not even an accurate gauge of duty size.

I thought the topic of choice was about the OP wanting to swap duties every 3 months?
Whatever, I think every office should have a revision and re-pick every 3 years. At least in this way a lot of part-timers seem to get the full-time hours that they have been craving for, and it gives other staff the chance to try other duties.

I believe the RM's quite stringent online testing as eliminated this 'learn a walk' mentality, just work to the fittings that the highly qualified logistics team have prepared for you & follow your nose, it's not rocket science, Its not hard to get the right letter in the right hole, most of the new posties in our office only need one day on a walk to pick it up, the jobs a stress free stroll in the park.fishtank wrote: it would take 15 years to "learn" them

I cant remember ever having it good, I don't get any more pay than anybody else but thanks for the generalisation, everybody who has been in this business since 1997 has gone through massive change and has accepted it and got on with it so another false fact, having a change of duty every 3 months is never going to happen, in our office we are so short staffed that we cant get walks covered on a daily basis so can you imagine the chaos that would happen and I imagine that most offices are like this. There has never been any person or tool that can equalise walks there are too many variables, i.e. how fast or slow the person doing the walk is, the different geography of the walk, in every revision I've ever seen it just seems an impossible task.
The jobs certainly not rocket science but it is more stressful now than its ever been.
