If we are a customer orientated we should be giving people what they want as you state , why then are we being driven to deliver at 5 pm in the day when its a pretty well known fact people want deliveries earlier in the day, you talk about being customer orientated yet within a year of going private we have simply become profit orientated at pretty much any cost.woody38 wrote: we are a customer oriented business but we still see the customer as the enemy they want longer openings in callers offices including Sunday opening, they want parcels on Sunday, So to all the people who say i’m Not working Sunday everybody else who works in a customer oriented business like ours works Sunday so why not us
We have to change to move on stay the same and we will sink.

Why do people want to strike
I do not want to strike, i do not want to lose £40 a week in my pension or work in a dangerous way. No postie i know thinks three bundles of work is doable in a safe way yet our company want us to do just that all to get a few more packets per walk. The union have put forward some good ideas on pensions and later working for some not all, our vote to strike should give us a chance of a fair deal. Share holders are being given money that could go into the pension that the company tell us they can not afford, we are a success and should be growing this leadership has no vision and needs changing of course while share holders are getting a nice dividend that will not happen.

If the shareholders don't get a nice dividend, why would they still be shareholders?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I don't want a strike but Pensions need protecting and why should I work until 5 pm if I signed up to a 2 pm ish finish ?
By all means take on new staff to work late but most of the longer term employees are happy with the current set up .
As for the company making a loss before the sell off that's incorrect .
Despite all the doom the profits are still rolling in

The dividend should reflect the companies results so the better the company do the better the dividend so how can the company not afford the pension if they are doing well enough to pay big dividends. We all know the big share holders include our CEO who had a nice K200 put into her pension.clashcityrocker wrote:If the shareholders don't get a nice dividend, why would they still be shareholders?

Unfortunately customers would prefer it if Royal Mail could deliver their parcels when they were most likely to be in which is late afternoon/early evening.elteleltel wrote:I don't want a strike but Pensions need protecting and why should I work until 5 pm if I signed up to a 2 pm ish finish ?

Most people don't really enjoy queuing up at the local delivery office to pick their Mail up.
I would imagine in the future there will be three separate deliveries for business's,residential non signed for items D2D etc and then later in the day Parcels and signed for items.

Why do people want to strike

several people posting about ' what the customer wants ' - unfortunately RM class the customer as the people who pay for the postage and not the people we deliver to. What we as posties regard as our customers, RM just see them as 'delivery points'. RM couldn't give a toss about what the people we deliver to want, they just want to keep large business customers happy.

OnAFlyer wrote:I take it you haven't even bothered reading anything about the CWU's proposals. They are suggesting 7am-7pm deliveries, the normal mail delivery early and packet drivers up until late evening. This will secure jobs, rather than the later pipeline RM want which does absolutely nothing for customers or staff, but it will increase RM's profits and shareholder dividends.
Don't be conned into thinking RM is only trying to do what the customer wants, and the big bad CWU are living in the past.
If we lose this dispute, we are finished as far as quality jobs go, and within 5-10 years there will be no RM as we know it and no USO because it's too harmful to profits.

The problem with the CWU 7am-7pm delivery span is that it will require employment whereas RM want everything done by the existing staff hence we are under so much pressure on deliveries.

I think like most people who work for Royal Mail they don't want to strike. RM want us to put more money in our pension for less, who does this benefit "us or the shareholders"? I'm sure many postman will be still be working for RM after our present directors, chairman and shareholders have long gone and reaped the benefits of slash and burn leaving poor postman with no pension, part-time wages and no social life. I'm not prepared to give up any of these.
Neither should any postman up and down our country either.

People do get bogged down into thinking a strike is an 'ends' and not a means to an ends. We don't want to strike but it is our only weapon against RM plans and people are eager to get it out.
They claim the pension is no longer affordable and yet 4 times as much was put into it than taken out last year. Perhaps if they hadn't closed it to new entrants in 2008 it wouldn't be in the shape it is now. You can't claim something is broken when it was you that broke it.
The agreement for no zero hour contracts and no sick pay is about to come to an end. RM are not prepared to sign it again. The CWU have stated that they will not accept zero hours under any circumstances. Rightly so in my opinion, there is no need for it.
RM always posts about 3% profit. It has for any years, even after all their modernisation and pension problems etc. It makes considerably more profit than this but hides it to avoid paying tax - somehow it has suddenly manages to find an extra £225M per year for dividend payments and yet still posts a 3% profit.
Basically, I don't trust a word they say. I see every day how well RM is doing and how well it could do with the right management and yet they claim they have to cut my contract to the bone for my own good.
No.

Losing a pitiful two days pay is NOTHING to what we will lose in the long term.
We can roll over and watch our wages drop and pensions become worthless, and our working conditions deteriorate or we can take ACTION.

This is the truth. For all those that say, "but, but, people want their mail early" - it isn't about people. It's about corporations. Corporations and their million pound delivery contract. All they care about is, "how late can we give it to you and are you guaranteeing next day?"shayanboon wrote:Could not agree more, 'end user' not RM concern
