No chance of strikes taking place before Christmas, by which time all momentum will have fizzled out. All in all a totally piss-poor effort of an uprising, lol! (**edited for better choice of words**)

I'm not particularly behind many of the reasons given for striking anyway but do feel the union have let down their members by not foreseeing this situation and pretty much wasting all the support they had.

I never supported the strike action in the first place and the union really have fluffed it! Massive oversight on their part. Amateur performance.

I think it is unfair for some agitators to start to question member's resolve. As one of the posters above said, he/she was not fully in support of some of the reasons for striking just like many members especially part timers in DC scheme that vote to give the Union a strong mandate to negotiate a good outcome.

What did the Union do? Within days, they announced a strike knowing that they signed a dodgy agreement previously... If we go back to 2013, even we amateurs can sort of read between the lines that we cannot simply strike without external mediation.

External mediation is not just a consultant but something set up properly...

Now they are going round saying RM did not win but it was a small technicality about who will lose the most. Wtf?

They lost and had to pay cost and they sort of know they were going to lose as well. Why bother?

To make some noise on a national scale and remind everyone that they are there to fight their members' corner.

Royal Mail haven't done a good job of fact checking and countering the CWU statements so why would they start now? The message that has therefore gone out to the masses is that RM won on a technicality alone and are the bad guys whilst the Union are the vanquished knights in shining armour.

That may be true but with the CWU making themselves a bit of a caricature I take a lot of what they say with a pinch of salt. A lot take it as gospel.

I don't know about your offices, in mine we found January to be busier than December, I think while striking at Christmas is good but striking in January is better as thats the busiest month (for our office) if you ask me, with catching up with parcel deliveries that got held up over Christmas and the January sales, especially if we do the job properly over Christmas, overtime bans, no extra sorting, start at the proper times, etc, that will get the shareholders breathing down RM's neck, they will be waiting for their parcels as well, the private couriers have never been able to manage the Christmas parcel rush ever and I don't see this year being any different.

Ride on RM's heels about mediation, complain if they are not getting up to speed if they try to delay and obfuscate, bring it up as a point of order with the mediator, if they want to play dirty...so can we !

Some good points... The first thing to do on a national scale is to urge members to do the job properly... That will start to hurt RM even before a strike and that is what they should have done whilst talking instead of blowing a huge mandate and rushing to a strike just before Xmas. That was too much of a gamble - not quite the nuclear option but it would have been if RM did not back down; another strike and then strike at Xmas and then we all fail including RM.

Do the job properly but people are too selfish and I have no time for selfish people or the Union that tacitly support or too scared of rocking the boat: some privileged ones will definitely lose out when and if we start doing the job properly and getting paid for actual hours worked...

Yep. Exactly this, for quite some time now January has been horrendous and feels at least as busy as December... pkt numbers hardly seem to decline from Christmas Pressure levels and you get the usual January deluge of holiday brochures, catalogues and D2D's.

I really don't know why people are getting so despondent at the thought of strikes being delayed until January.

This and we won't be p*****g jo public off and might get more support from them, as most tell me they don't care who delivers their parcels as long as it arrives, and as far as letters go the younger generation doesn't want them they get most by paperless billing and junk mail goes straight in bin.

fishtank wrote:Royal Mail have made it clear they intend to stall the process in their comms today. Even the process of choosing a mediator gives them the opportunity to stall the process and there's little the union can do. I said 4 years ago we had signed up to a "no strike agreement" in all but words ( you can search the archives if you're really bored ) and was ridiculed by some on here but sadly that's exactly what we did.

This is how it will now play out.
The union will talk the talk and pretend that strikes at Christmas are a real threat even though any of us who've been here any length of time know that we've never had a strike in December and never will.

At some point in the next 4-5 weeks there will be an an announcement that a real breakthrough has been made and the now infamous "talks extended for another 1-2 weeks" will appear on this forum.

About two weeks later deal of the century 3 will be trumpeted as the best thing since sliced bread and even though our pension is screwed and well be trialling this, that and the next thing it's all good because we've managed to get the pay deal consolidated into basic pay, a 3.30 last letter for "most" of you guys although probably not the new starts and guess what, we've got RM to sign up to another 3 years of legally binding agreements. Sorry about the pension blah blah what can you do, by the way here's £400 lump sum just before Christmas.

The PEC endorses the deal on the basis that it was " the best deal on the table".

The members accept the deal because at the end of the day they know what up s**t creek feels like.

We spend the next 3 years complaining about said deal on here.

I really wish I was wrong but.....
Spot on.

According to Peter Tilley on RMTV all offers will be withdrawn if there is even a threat of strike action. Assuming there was, & still is, does that mean we are starting from scratch in the next round of negotiations ?

Perhaps the union were not so naive after all, as some have suggested, in knowing RM would use the high court route. The onus is on Royal Mail to make an acceptable improved offer, if not then we know the alternative action is a possibility. RM may think £500 (Estimate an improved from £375) is going sway some members to cross the picket line before or after Christmas. I believe the ballot result shows more strength of feeling on the other issues in the four pillars is evident.
Maybe after TWO more weeks (They've be at it for 18 months) with the help of external mediation an agreement will be arrived at, After all why prolong the talks if the threat of strike action is damaging to the business & customers will go elsewhere. Wishful thinking!

A date no. They have to agree on the chairman as he has to be independent.

However, if I have read the stuff from Royal Mail and the CWU, there is a time limit.
