Packet Scanning
It was announced quite a while ago that all packets would eventually be scanned in mail centre's.
Our MC is still only scanning tracked and SD items - we have had the (new) PDA's for several months now.
With no talk or seeming effort being made to start scanning all (most) packets
What is the situation like at other MC's ?
Is this policy going to be quietly shelved for various reasons ie incompetence, bureaucracy, cost and the sheer time to scan 10,000's of packets each shift.?

If anything I'm expecting to see packet scanning start to happen on all shifts in MCs. If RM get more packet sorting machines (which will fit in to most MCs), then the machine will scan the barcodes

In Glasgow we pretty much scan everything.....
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

At Bristol all the packets are scanned by small device worn over the hand. After the parcel sorting machine is installed 30% of parcels will still need to be scanned and sorted by hand because the machine only sorts items of shoe box size. Anything smaller of bigger will be rejected. Looks like Royal Mail has bought second best again or even third best with this machine. Could be management incompetance/fear of higher management, impact on jobs/CWU or just saving money on which machine to buy led to this version being bought but will as they say not in itself lead to any job losses just as with the flat sorting machines when they were installed.

I would have expected RM go get a machine like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCFeAFK2s9c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It would probably sort a good chunk of the small packets

Interesting - as usual RM make a big play of some initiative, then leave individual offices to their own devices in implementing that policy.
It seems these new packet machines aren't up to much either - who would have thought it !

As said by posties probably even back as far as the original ASMs, ALFs and coding desks of the 1960/70s.

Hardly any of us scan anything once we're out on delivery due to the simple fact that Royal Mail can never provide equipment that works. 3D barcodes NEVER work for me.
On that note, new PDAs don't work with the grip gloves. Now that's streamlining for you.

According to our shift manager we have no excuses and everyone on the packet area has to scan, even if they only come on for 30 mins from another area. The strange thing is a few of the full time staff have some objection to scanning and won't use them and nothing is said to them. Managers make a big fuss about finger scanners and then turn a blind eye when people don't use them, trypical managers!

A manager showed us a performance breakdown on the PC in our work time learning last week, it had a top 10 scanners section with everybody’s full names on full display, obviously this was totally unacceptable and breaks the agreement with the CWU. The union were informed and are dealing with it.

You use encouragement, teamwork, even colleagues acting as guides, but you don't use embarrassment and public humiliation. That just makes things worse.
