Royal Mail delay South Woodford delivery office move

The relocation of the South Woodford delivery office has been postponed, the Recorder has confirmed.

In as statement, Royal Mail said it has delayed the transfer from the Marlborough Road site to Chingford to allow for further planning and to ensure staff transfer went as smoothly as possible.

It said that there will be no impact to the service residents receive during this period.

“We confirm that the relocation of South Woodford delivery office to our site in Chingford, Station Road, has been postponed to allow further planning into the move,” a Royal Mail spokesman said.

“This is to ensure that the transfer of our operations and our people goes as smoothly as possible and we minimise any impact on our customers.

“We are continuing to work with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and will confirm a revised date for this move to our people and our customers as soon as possible.”

Royal Mail said it needed to find a new location for South Woodford delivery operations as it is currently housed in an old building that no longer meets requirements.

They explained that Chingford delivery office has “sufficient space” to incorporate South Woodford delivery operations and vehicles on site and will also offer improved services to customers

Royal Mail acknowledges the interest that the relocation has raised within the community and whilst it welcomes feedback from customers, it said the company needs to modernise operations and have a strong track record of managing operational change.

However a source who wanted to remain anonymous told the Recorder that Chingford delivery office staffare not happy at the move.

“The South Woodford staff are going to be crammed in,” they said.

A spokesman from the CWU confirmed that it was in dicussion with Royal Mail and take the issue with the company’s closure strategy across London.

“We want them to honour a national agreement to make sure staff are compensated for extra travel and have a parking space,” he said.

“There are concerns about South Woodford going to Chigford because of the operations and space that is needed and we won’t be supporting the closure at this time.”
