The Royal Mail has launched an investigation following claims of a security breach at one of the company's biggest sorting offices.

An undercover reporter was able to walk in off the street and start work simply by saying he was agency staff, the Sunday Mail reported.

It is claimed that he was able to handle thousands of letters and parcels, including bank and credit cards, at Scotland's largest sorting office in Springburn, Glasgow.

The newspaper said that he was not asked for ID or if he had experience and no-one vetted him.

And the Sunday Mail reporter was sorting mail within minutes, received only a seven-second health and safety briefing and walked out unchallenged after working for 90 minutes.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "Everyone is supposed to be vetted by the agencies we use.

"Security is of the utmost importance to Royal Mail and we will be investigating this matter fully."

John Brown of the Communications Workers Union told the newspaper: "Everything the management touch turns to mud. They have lost the plot.

"We are seriously concerned for the safety of members, given the terrorist threat.

"It wouldn't surprise me if you could do the same in units across the country."
