Yep I agree with you on this poorly designed and no one has been properly trained in the use of all functions but hopefully will not need to be in the future as they are crap!norm wrote:The old PDAs used a resistive touchscreen i.e. you apply pressure any it registers it. The new ones are capacitve i.e. they detect electrical current. The reason why the new ones get confused is touching it at two different points on the screen confuses it and it can't process the information.
The new PDA is poor design for what we need anyway, it's oversized, it's constantly going to the wrong menu by accidentally touching one of the lower buttons, and it'll frequently mis-scan barcodes i.e. it'll make the noise it's scanned but doesn't register on screen, great when you're a half a mile from the box you thought you'd just scanned.

I was using one the other day that was faulty and the laser was constantly flickering without me touching the yellow button, so as I'm walking around with it strapped to the back of my hand it was constantly scanning the entire world and kept giving that annoying ''incorrect bar code'' beep every few seconds whenever it saw something that it thought was a bar code.

My point being that the new PDAs are worse for the old people than the original bricks. As you yourself state in your posttoomuchcoke wrote:No, the old bricks had precisely the same problem ... They just had chunkier bezel which reduced the chances of it happening, mostly it only occurred to (generally old) people who managed to wrap the cable for the "pen" around their hand before attempting to sign.BeamishStout wrote:And herein lies the problem having to explain to the recipients - Don't lean on the PDA in any way with their wrists OR as to do as you suggest. Just not professional at all IMO and makes the public feel like it is their fault that they cannot sign the new PDA with the pen. In this respect they are worse than the old bricks.
But yeah, moving the signature box down the screen would cure the problem and should be a pretty easy fix.
Hence my point thatThey just had chunkier bezel which reduced the chances of it happening

If the pen doesn't work and I can't get them to understand why (usually old people), I tell them the pen sometimes doesn't work so to just use their finger. Sometimes they'll then use their fingernail, so I've just said I'll sign for them.
It's pretty bad that apart from the people who regularly sign for things, probably half of all customers make this mistake. After I tell them they need to keep their hand off the screen, I always say that everybody does it so not to worry. It probably makes some customers feel stupid to have to be told how to write their name, as if it's their fault.
I do love though when someone writes with their hand touching the screen, then hands it back and says "is it supposed to be invisible?"

I do keep pressing the volume control buttons by mistake which is quite annoying every time you need to scan a 2D - which just seems to be every parcel these days
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

That comes as no surprise that they ignore offers of help from qualified Postmen.thegreatestfreddy wrote:
Should be an easy problem to solve being an ex programmer... have told my Lino I can help but no takers as yet ...
Why do they advocate "be brilliant, be positive, be part of it" ??

its like carrying a London Brick around, Del boy would have been proud of it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, another bit of Chinese made equipment, made for cheapness. One day we will get equipment that it made for purpose, but probably not in my lifetime.

It's a generation thing.Youngsters hold the pen at the end so use tip only.Oldies hold the pen normally so rest their hand on the screen

I've noticed this change too...wacko74 wrote:I'm more interested in when the elastic band team are going to source us some elastic bands that are fit for purpose... the latest supply in our D.O. are so small and tight they instantly snap if you try and put them round a bundle that's any more than about 1 inch thick.
