Rejoin Royal Mail advice / rules?

Post by TiredPostman »

Hello, i'm just trying to get some facts / information on what i've been told.

I was with the Royal Mail for over 3 years up untill this year when i decided on a career change (HUGE mistake), and i'd love to come back to being a OPG at my local delivery office. I was good at the job, knew most of the duties in the office, got on well with pretty much everyone - even our last manager! Before i left he tried to talk me into staying and said i could always come back if i wanted.

Well after this career change turning into a terrible decision i'd like to go back! I Haven't got a problem with starting at the bottom again, on less pay for a year, even taking a part time contract for now, etc etc.

But i've now been told that you appartently can't rejoin for a whole 2 years? Is this correct?!

If anyone has information on the matter please share.

The 2 year thing is if you've been Ill Health Retired. Definitely not if you left on your own accord.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

If you liked the job. Why not. You'd be a much better candidate than Joe Public straight off the street. You don't need vetting and you're already trained. The only problem might be if there's no vacancies in your old office. Why not pop in and have a chat to your old manager? Good Luck. :thumbup

Well that's good to hear, as i was thinking i'm not going to wait around for 2 years. So i'll have to keep an eye out and try my luck again.

Do you think these later delivery times/shifts will come into effect? As being a 'Newbie' again, i'm sure i'd end up getting them shifts!

To the 'Dont bother' comment - i know it's changed for the worse, but trust me i'd come back in a heartbeat! As currently i do 12/13 hour days, 5 days a week, for alot less money than my 39 hours at Royal Mail. Even on the heavy days finishing no later than 4pm, now i get home gone 7 :-(.

Ignore the don't bother comment.

It is still a good job. Yes it's getting worse but it's only when you look around at other people who have left that you realise the job is pretty good.

We had a guy leave to join the buses. Loved it for a few weeks now tells us it is the worst thing he did. He can be working any time from 4am-1am. Different shift every day. Abuse from public. No sick pay. Works 5 out of 7 days. More responsibility for pretty much the same pay.
At least in this job you generally start at the same time and finish before tea time.

I accept it's not for everyone and there are bad parts of the job. But it's not as bad as most on here would have you believe.

Well that's the thing, i bump into some of the Postie's occasionally, and just the other day one of them said theve had a letter around the office asking if some people want to increase their hours, and that they need 2/3 more people as well, so he spoke to my old manager for me but that's when the manager said there's a two year rule before i can reapply!

Exactly my point, espicially with the busy period coming up! I could literally go straight in and crack on, know the office, the area, the people, the new PDA's, the sorting, the routes, etc.

So he either has this two year rule misunderstood... or just doesn't actually like me that much! Haha.

Hence before i spoke to him again i wanted some knowledge on the subject of rejoining.

Well i can understand it's not a nice job if you don't know how to stick up for yourself and know your rights, but luckily that was never a problem for me.

D2D's were probably my least favourite part! And waiting for my own duty...

But the pension was actually alright, the working times are great, i wasn't bothered what the weather was doing, great bunch of people, paid well, etc.

Sometime's i guess you don't know how good u've got it untill it's gone! Which for me, is very true after leaving.

The DOM can't just give you a job. They'll have to advertise the vacancy internally, then externally, you and whoever else applies, HR make a decision etc.

If I were in your position I'd be looking at any PT positions in RM within 20 miles of you or however far you're prepared to travel and simply get back in, then you can set about transferring.

PS tell us what job you left for :hmmmm :Very Happy

I went back after leaving too. Mostly because it was the only job in the area I had to move to with the Mrs.

I had to sit through the dreadfully long and somewhat pointless induction day again. Was weird hearing them bum the job up to newbies after being on the other side

Good luck!

I did get back in... Different office, part time, etc - but so far so good.

As i'm a 'Newbie' again, i'm even loving the Christmas period!
