Matty,
Well, if you're "the best postman already in my office after only 5 month" then seniority in the Royal Mail becoming a thing of the past can't come too soon for you. :thumbup :cuppa
Why spend all day out delivering letters when you should be DOM ? :Applause

Lottery.

Every year the jobs go in a metaphorical hat and assigned at random. Watch the how suddenly everyone would push for balance between the walks . . .

Seniority is most certainly not illegal. However its application is limited by law and with increasing numbers f women in the workplace and an increasingly part-time workplace, may come under challenge from new quarters.

Brandy,
Yes, that's the trouble. :thumbup
"performance" would mean "the runners" get the best rounds in a repack while those of us who do the job properly don't :thumbdown
"attendance" would put those with time off from worn out backs, hips or knees, or a disability, having the worst walks, :thumbdown while
"managers appraisals" just means favouritism. :thumbdown :thumbdown
Seniority wouldn't have lasted so long if it wasn't the best, though not faultless, system :thumbup :thumbup and, being way down the seniority list, I DON'T have an interest to declare. :cuppa

Have to agree...this nonsense should be relegated to the past that RM/CWU currently exist in.

Not long now now till union rolls-over and shafts new starts yet again protecting so-called senior posties legacy pish and pension

Further pension holidays anyone?

this would be so true if seniority went, its the fairest way we can have,

if left for management to decide you could end up with some complaining that they work all their days off and annual leave so why is *so and so" above me who shock horror went to spain for 2 weeks when he should be here getting double wages,
then john smith who's served the company well for 30 years but cannot get around like he used to due to the abuse his employers have inflicted on his aching body over the years then shoved on the long rough hole estate duty in the office nobody wants
management still manipulate the seniority list now, making duties that were FT to PT so most can't apply for them if they fancy it anyway

The biggest moaners are the last ones in when they don't have a seat but are the same people who do not offer a seat too those who are old or disabled. One day they will be old too and may be the oldest in their office but without seniority no one will be working in RM after 5 years time!
