working til 5pm or later if it is a busy day and your boss expects you to you to complete your delivery in the middle of winter and in the dark ... sounds like fun if you ask me ... i'm glad i'm out but have loads of sympathy for you guys having to put up with this sh!t

later finishes dark nights black ice , blizzards , freezing temps , sickness and accidents will go thru the roof . your life will be just royal mail ,, why on earth is it called royal mail now anyway .
I've often worked late hours clearing deliveries and I'm not someone who has been much bothered by delivering in the dark before - when I was getting an extra 30 or 40 pounds a day for the extreme hassle of doing so! Doing that as standard tho??? Every day in the winter?? Bonkers - I would need a massive pay rise to be tempted to be a 'night postie' if that's what they want. It gets too dark to read addresses at 4pm midwinter.
Doing packets at christmas in the dark is bad enough. Mail not a bloody chance. What about driveways that are death traps even in the light. Trips amd falls will go through the roof if it comes in.

I am totally against later finishes, and agree working in the dark in our job is treacherous.
But no more dangerous than it was when we used to have a 6.50am first letter.
In fact in the winter, this was lethal what with slippery drives etc, more so first thing in a morning.

Remember the days and you could not get out quick enough. Looks like the dispatches from mail centres will go out at midnight as now leave at 10pm if it's being pushed back 2 hours.Roads will be quieter...

But at least you knew is was going to get lighter as you got further round. Whereas with late evening finishes, you'll be working in the dark at the tail end of a shift where you are more tired.
Slips ) trips through the roof working at dark o clock on a winter evening?
I'm not condoning this, I think it's a step backwards.
Just saying and I well remember my first day back then physically pulling myself up a steep icy drive by a privet hedge to deliver my very first letter.
It will cost RM more in lost time through taking longer, and sick pay as a result, the current management won't know what's hit them.

All shifts will get pushed back 2 hours and DOs will get their mail 3 hours later as the DO runs will hit all the commuter traffic

No, darkness is more of a danger late in the day when fatigue is setting in.
And fresh snow first thing in the morning is safer than when it's been compacted to ice later in the day.
Anyone who has actually been out delivering mail in the dark at both ends of the day (I'm well experienced in this) will tell you that the end of the day is massively more hazardous and difficult.
You cannot compare being the only soul out on the streets at the crack of dawn to being out on busy streets trying to read mail addresses while holding it by a porch xmas decorations!
I think muggings and attacks on postal workers will go up because you will be an easy target at least in daylight you can see if someone is lurking around, they really haven't though this through properly.
