Royal mail comes through as letter from Scotland addressed only to 'St Ives Mermaid' miraculously found its way to her door

This may just be one of the most quirky tales you read today - it involves a Cornish mermaid, a kind-hearted Scot and heroics from Royal Mail

Quite often posties get a hard time if they fail to adequately deliver a letter or package, but Royal Mail is having its praises sung after recent heroics and the St Ives Mermaid is amazingly at the heart of it.

Laura Evans, AKA the adored St Ives Mermaid, made her name two years ago after she started washing up on west Cornwall beaches. She soon made her hobby into a business and has been delighting small children, and if we're honest adults alike, at beaches and venues all across Cornwall.

Nevertheless if you thought being a professional mermaid in Cornwall could not get brilliantly quirky enough - you would have been wrong.

This week Laura was sent a mermaid themed postcard from an unknown fan from Edinburgh and it arrived without much difficulty - despite just being addressed to 'Laura Evans (Mermaid), St Ives, Cornwall'.

“It’s such a nice story”, said Laura. “I really, really want to track down who wrote the postcard and am helping the shares on social media will help.

“The beautiful postcard came from a stranger in Edinburgh who knew just my name, it made a lovely gesture.

“Thank you so much to the Post Office for delivering it to The Magick Mermaid in St Ives who knew exactly where to find me.

“Most of all a heartfelt thank you to the person who sent this – I would love to return the gesture.

“Although they (Post Office) didn’t have my exact address they cleverly took it to a shop in town called The Magick Mermaid hoping she’d know where to find me – and she did.”

Cornwall Live contacted the Post Office - who agreed our email won the award for the most quirky request received that day - to see if there was any other famous cases of bizarre letters they knew of that had miraculously made its way to the recipient despite limited information.

They've passed it on to the Royal Mail who are going to get back to us - though we suspect a letter travelling from Scotland to Cornwall to find a mermaid might just not be able to be topped.

The postcard read: "Yesterday I read your story in the Guardian, so wonderful! Today I saw this postcard and thought you'd like it. Warmest wishes from Edinburgh."

The St Ives Mermaid shared the news with her thousands of followers on social media.

"This is so wonderful," said one Instagram follower. "I can't believe it managed to get to you from the address. Everyone knows each other in Cornwall!"

A third said: "This is fantastic! It's like the magic of 'Santa, North Pole'."

So Scottish posties are canny enough to know that a Mermaid is more likely to reside in St Ives Cornwall than St Ives Cambridgeshire.
