Postal workers got their message across to management by staging a wildcat strike this morning.

The workers gathered outside Falkirk’s Garrison Place post office this morning after a failure to resolve a dispute between Communications Workers Union (CWU) members and local management ended with the wildcat walk out.

A CWU member on the picket line said: “This is not a national issue, it’s purely local. Members met this morning and agreed to go on strike over the conditions here and our treatment at the hands of the local management.

“This strike today and the turnout shows the strength of feeling the workers have over this issue. At the moment we are waiting for the CWU divisional rep, who is coming through from Edinburgh, to arrive and then we will take it from there.”

Another postal worker said: “We are pretty devastated this had to take place and we are not being allowed to deliver the mail to our customers, who are the most important thing to us. “We just want to be allowed to deliver a decent service.” When asked how long the strike was going to go on for, a union member responded: “How long is a piece of string?”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that unballoted industrial action has taken place this morning at Falkirk delivery office, affecting the FK1, FK2 and FK5 delivery areas. “We sincerely apologise to customers in this area for any disruption to their mail services. We are doing all we can to minimise this disruption and we encourage our staff to come back to work. “Royal Mail is fully committed to the process to resolve concerns of postal workers based in the Newtownards office by following the national jointly agreed framework with the Communication Workers Union (CWU).”

Falkirk walkout this morning : Striking posties deliver a message to management

Post by tommyrep »

As ever we get the same response from RM management spokesperson. "Unballoted" strike action, to express the validity of the staffs action. They always fail to respond to the underlying reason. Is it never the case that managers apply " unagreed" executive action ! in the first place ? What options are left open when staff who are treated with contempt by an intransigent management ? They always place the fault at the feet of the staff. A walkout generally is the result of pig headed managers, who then spout out to the public THEY are endeavouring to maintain services. Effing hypocrites.

If the "nationally agreed framework" was being applied there wouldn't be people standing at the gate. You would think that would be pretty obvious to senior management.

Doesn't surprise me

Our office won't do anything like this - it never has gone on 'unofficial action' in all the years Ive worked there. And there are a few issues which are still p*ssing most of us off these days with things like moving staff off regular duties just so they can lapse deliveries, not dealing with grievances, ignoring reasonable requests for supplies etc etc. But most of the guys in our office don't have any sort of backbone and just seem to put up with it.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Those who work at perth office will know our "manager". We have been through this before and we will not put up with it again. Out until the manager is removed.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
