Holidays

Post by Judgee »

May is still a popular time for holidays. Usually a half term week in there somewhere and bank holidays. I would imagine wanting 3 weeks off together at that time probably doesn't help. The problem is, in doing what you are doing could very well give other people in your office ideas. If they give it to you then potentially everyone in your office could say "oh I've booked 3 weeks off in August next year for the holiday of a lifetime but as I told you in advance it's ok isn't it!" It could become a problem with everyone booking up weeks earlier and earlier with nothing left for those who fill out the leave form at the appropriate time in your office!

Working for RM will always give you a headache when needing time off. Even more so now every office seems to be understaffed. It goes with the territory unfortunately!

Your best bet is to pay/book the dream holiday now (if you want to risk losing your money?) Then when the official time for booking up holidays at work arrives, try and book as many weeks as you can then to fit in with your trip. Then try and convince (or bribe) people with any other weeks off you need to swap with you. Alternatively speak to union and see if they can intervene in anyway although I doubt there is much they can do?

Good luck!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

ring CWU, ACAS and H&S up and tell them your employer is refusing your holidays, this is illegal
RM only allow up to 3 days carry over too, any more than that, you can insist on taking that year regardless if your dom says it's ok for more.
that aside, you cannot expect to jump ahead and cherry pick certain weeks off, may can be also a premium time with school holidays and 2 bank holidays
what is the system for picks there? we go into a group and remain in that always, then say 1st year 5th choice, next year 4th and so on.

No it isn't/ They can refuse a specific request for leave, but they cannot stop you taking statutory leave during the year

5 days are automatically carried over. But anymore can be carried over but must be by written application.

Yes, you are legally allowed to take your statutory entitlement during the leave year. that's 28 Days and can include Bank Holidays.

So how much is it to buy 2 more weeks leave? And do you then get paid for those 2 weeks you have brought?

Its based on your basic weekly wage the figures are below. Yes, you get paid on those weeks as well. What you are doing is paying so much each week to cover the week you buy extra so it doesn't cost Royal Mail anything in the end.

On Entry: Four and a half week's contractual holiday Percentage adjustment

Option 1: 5 Week's holidays 1%
Option 2: 6 Week's holiday 3%

Standard after 5 year's service

Option 3: 5 week's holidays 0.6%
Option 4: 6 week's holidays 2.6%

Standard after 15 year's service - five weeks 1 days' holiday
Option 5: 6 week's holiday 1.6%

it is definitely illegal to refuse you your minimum entitlement within the year, its against health and safety regulations, what if he crashes a van and kills someone and blames fatigue due to no leave available?
i once called acas up over this before and they confirmed it, obviously not the "what ifs" were said, but you can definitely demand the legal requirements, albeit guessing this guy started after premium weeks were taken, but he can still demand his/her legal entitlement within the year, up to the manager if they want to risk a corporate manslaughter charge by breaking the law by refusing leave, same goes when idiots work their holidays, if they had an accident it could open up a can of worms if the h&s executive found out they should be on leave
